MUSCATINE, Iowa - James J. Curtis Sr., 81, of Muscatine, died on Monday, February 3, 2014, at Genesis Hospital, East Campus, Davenport.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Reverend Sam Barger of Church of God will officiate. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, 2013, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the family in care of Delores.
James was born on June 5, 1932, in Muscatine, the son of Clement L. and Minnie Peetz Curtis Sr. He married Delores M. Lewis on January 6, 1951, in Muscatine.
He owned and operated Jim Curtis Auto Sales and Body Shop for 45 years in Muscatine. He later managed Roby Street Auto Sales.
He was a CB and Ham radio operator and enjoyed talking with the barge operators. He enjoyed restoring antiques and family gatherings were his favorites. He loved visiting people, was known for his friendliness, and he never met a stranger. His best pal was Nick, his dog, and he loved telling stories to his grandchildren and he enjoyed singing and music.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Delores of Muscatine; two sons, James J. Curtis Jr. and wife, Trina, of Muscatine, and Steve Curtis and wife, Angeline, of Muscatine; two daughters, Rose Whittaker and husband, Rick, of Muscatine, and Angie Hammond and husband, Greg, of Muscatine; 10 grandchildren, Alicia "Wish" Payne and husband, Troy, of Muscatine, Erik Whittaker and wife, Sara, of Iowa City, Brian Curtis of Muscatine, Becky Sulzberger and husband, Branden, of Muscatine, Alex Curtis of Muscatine, Kyle Curtis and wife, Toree, of Muscatine, Brad Curtis of Muscatine, Alyvia Curtis of Muscatine, Jarid Hammond and significant other, Shelbie, of Muscatine, and Tyler Hammond of Muscatine; and four great grandchildren, Breanna and Emily Payne, Ursula Knerr, and Cooper Sulzberger.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Clement "Gene" Curtis and Harold Peterson.
