Donald Eugene Cain was born on May 7, 1939 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Roy Eugene and Ruth Dorothy Marie (Geronzin) Cain. He grew up on the family farm in rural Delmar and graduated from Elwood High School in 1957. He then began farming and served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years. He met Carol Jane Petersen in 1962 and they were married on February 23, 1963 in Clinton, Iowa.
Don was a lifelong farmer and farmed the family farm with his wife Carol for over 50 years.
Don was devoted to many projects and organizations and was generous with his time, talent and resources. He had been an 11 year director of the AIF Southeast District and had received the Iowa Fair "Man of the Year" Award in Des Moines. Additionally, he had served as board member for the Clinton County Pork Producers for six years and as a board member of the First Trust and Savings Bank in Wheatland. He was first a member of the Lost Nation Masonic Lodge and later the Zealous Masonic Lodge #435 of Oxford Junction.
Don loved his family and farming and had a longtime interest with his family in showing sheep. He also loved his church, St. John's Lutheran Church at Bliedorn, where he was an active member. Through the years he enjoyed playing slow pitch baseball and was an avid bowler.
Those left to honor Don's memory include his wife Carol J. Cain of Delmar, IA; children, Douglas Cain of Delmar, IA, Cawyn Cain of DeWitt, IA, and Daryn Cain of Maquoketa, IA; 1 grandchild, Regina (Raymond) Dascher; 2 great-grandchildren, Skylee and Samuel; a sister, Linda (Dick) Block of Delmar, IA; a brother, Darrell (Lola) Cain of Elwood, IA; 19 nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and nephews. "I am saddened that I won't be able to pay homage to such a wonderful man in our farming community. He always had a smile and a joke in his pocket. I rode my bike over to play, to see a newborn animal, sleep-overs, birthday parties, Halloween parties etc. When my dad had surgeries; Mike and his several surgeries, Don and the boys were amongst the first to arrive along with Darrell. That is truly the farmer way. I can't ever make sense of these things except I do have a strong faith in God, and I believe God needed Don to tend to some land that did not quite look as healthy as Don's fields of corn. I will miss the smile that he ALWAYS had on his face. To the family, I intend to visit and cook (that is another Iowa tradition...lots of food) a dinner for you all when I get back from Colorado. I believe in my heart that after the shock of this all, is when you need company the most. So please don't lock the door if you see me coming. I am an excellent cook. For now, know that I have been on my knees praying for your comfort, guidance, peace and tranquility throughout you time of need. You have oodles of support, just please utilize it. I love you, Cain family! My deepest sympathy, Tracy Benton Budihas "
