Garland "Jack" Abney
January 18, 1926 - October 14, 2014

Garland "Jack" Abney, of Antigo, died Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Eastview Medical and Rehabilitation Center. He was 88 years old. He was born on January 18, 1926 in the town of Nashville, Forest County, a son of Armster and Lilly Mae (Derickson) Abney. He married Janette Weber on August 21, 1954 in Crandon. She survives.

Mr. Abney was a class of 1943 graduate of Crandon High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre. Following military service he moved to Oregon where he logged for several years.

In 1954 he continued his education at Oregon Technical School and became an electrical technician. He moved to Antigo in 1964 and was employed at General Telephone Company working at the Antigo Radar Base maintaining electronic equipment for the distant early warning system retiring in 1988.

Mr. Abney was a member of SS. Mary & Hyacinth Catholic Church and the National Rifle Association. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, reading and planting trees.

In addition to his wife survivors include a daughter Rachel (Randall) Abney-Bruns of Manawa; two grandchildren Hannah and Eric; two brothers Winfred and Loyal Abney both of Crandon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Wenzel in infancy and Ira Abney.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Bradley Funeral Home with Rev. David Schmidt officiating. Entombment will take place in Queen of Peace Mausoleum where the Antigo veterans will conduct military rites. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to All Saints Catholic School or charity of your choice.
