John Hartly II
May 6, 1936 - August 16, 2013

John Hartly Newsum, age 77, of Kirkland, WA passed away peacefully at his home on August 16, 2013. Hartly was born on May 26, 1936 to John and Eva Newsum of Seattle, WA. Hartly spent most of his childhood in Walla Walla, WA, but moved to Spokane as a teenager. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1954. He received his BA from Whitman College in 1959 and his LLB from Willamette University in 1963 (?). He married Judy Ann Kroening on August 15, 1964. After their wedding, they lived in Seattle area before moving to Bellevue, WA in 1967. In 1999, Hartly and Judy sold their home and moved into a condo in Kirkland, WA.

Hartly was an attorney for over 40 years. Upon graduation from law school, Hartly served for four years with the King County Prosecutor's office. He opened his own law practice in Bellevue in the early 1970s. He spent many years as a defense attorney for both civil and criminal cases, but he passionate about providing pro bono services for those in need. He was a volunteer with Volunteer Legal Services, Volunteer Attorneys for People with AIDS and the Housing Justice Project. In 2003, Hartly was named the King County Bar Association's Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. In addition to his law career, Hartly served several years on the board of the Multiple Sclerosis Association of King County, Eastside Alcohol and Referral Center and was a member of the Seattle Jaycees.

In his free time, Hartly enjoyed gardening, reading, and traveling with his wife Judy. Hartly and Judy had four children and five grandchildren. Hartly was preceded in death by his parents John and Eva. He is survived by his wife Judy, sister Nan Korslund of Mercer Island, his son Sean (Sarah) of Bellevue, WA, daughter Nicole (Allyn) Chrisman of Brier, WA, daughter Mary (DJ) Yoho of Sandwich, IL, daughter Shannon of Kirkland, WA and grandchildren Kimberly, Henry, Erik, Josephine and Mackenzie.

A memorial service to be held on August 24, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in Kirkland, WA.
