Patricia was born in Seattle, Washington, on April 17, 1924, the daughter of Dr. Raymond and Margaret (Hickman) Jeffery. She graduated from Beverly Hills High School in California in 1942 and attended Iowa State University where she met Richard K. Mathison. They were married March 18, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois. Richard left soon thereafter to serve as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater. Pat waited with her parents in California until after the war, when the couple made their home in Ames and began life together.

Pat had many interests and talents, but her most lasting impact is the strong family relationships she nurtured in her role as a wife and mother. She was a member of Christ Community Church. Pat had a deep faith in God that she shared throughout her life by service to her church and the community. She continued to plant seeds of faith in those that met her and cared for her during her years at Northcrest.
