MIDDLETON - Jahn Hermann Tinglum, 89, began celebrating his new "life" in heaven on Friday, July 17, 2015. Beloved by all, he will be missed here for his kindness, sharp wit, intelligence, devotion to his wife, Esther, and family, helpfulness to all neighbors and friends, and his persistence to eat pie first. He loved and was loved by all the dogs in this world....and one cat, Kattepuss.
His wife of 68 years, Esther, was his love and his heart. Their loving devotion to each other served as an example for all the family to see and follow. Jahn's family love was carried on to their 4 children: Penny Derringer (Jay Maynard), Liesel (Tim) Reilly, Hillis (Cathy) Tinglum, and Jay (Kristen) Tinglum. Then there were the grandchildren: Bren, Becca, Adam, Kirsten, Jacqueline, Jack, Nick, Margie, Jahn, Jamie, Lisa and Michelle. Then, the great-grandchildren: Tyler, Carson, Brillan, Brighton, Kara, Tre, Nadia, Bella, Isaac and Aiden. Then there were the special nieces and nephews and multitudes of others who claimed him as their "Papa".
Jahn was preceded in death by his parents Ottar and Margit, brothers Ole and Sverre, sister Liesel, daughter-in-law Sharon and great-grandson Tyler.
Born in Norway in 1925, Jahn and his family emigrated to the U.S. when he was 2 years old. Jahn enlisted in the Navy right after graduating from high school in Black River Falls, WI. As he was serving on a ship in the Pacific during WWII, he was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart. Many years later, his service was still recognized as he became one of the privileged veterans to be invited on one of the earliest Badger Honor Flights to Washington D. C.
Following his Navy experience, Jahn obtained a B.S. in Education from the University of Toledo, OH and later obtained an M.S. in Science Education from UW Madison. Jahn then moved his family to Port Edwards, WI in 1951 where they spent the next 15 years.
In Port Edwards, Jahn was a high school science and math teacher and also coached football and curling. He then expanded his career to become principal (still teaching and coaching) and eventually became Superintendent of Schools for the Port Edwards school district (JEHS). His time spent at JEHS (K-12) was greatly respected and admired.
In 1967, Jahn moved the family to Middleton, WI where he worked at the Department of Public Instruction in Madison until retirement in 1985. Jahn and Esther moved from their home in Middleton to Oakwood Village in Madison in 2011. During the 48 years spent in the Middleton/Madison area, Jahn became well-known for his volunteer activities such as donating over 30 gallons of blood to the Red Cross, serving on the buildings and grounds committee for many years at their church (Middleton Community UCC), driving seniors around for 30 years with the Middleton Outreach Ministry, Oakwood Village, fixing anybody and everybody's lawn mowers, clocks, watches, cars, motorcycles and anything mechanical. He and Esther were honored with being voted the "Good Neighbors" for the Middleton Good Neighbor Festival. Jahn was also known by every dog who ever walked by as they'd pull their owner into Jahn's garage to be handed a dog biscuit and friendly scratch and pat on the head.
Jahn's life was marked by many highlights of family, study, travel, hobbies and wild adventures. He was involved with the Sons of Norway and Ygdrasil Norwegian Literary Society for many years. He and his brother planted 6,000 trees in 1957 on the family's woodlot. He obtained his pilot's license in 1988 after retirement. He and Esther traveled extensively with trips taking them to Alaska several times, Norway twice, Cayman Islands, Canada, Switzerland, a French barge trip, Peru, Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica and several places in the U.S. His big smile was so evident while backpacking in Wyoming at 70 years of age, zip lining through the treetops in Costa Rica, climbing Machu Picchu, anaconda hunting at night in the Peruvian jungle, stepping over sea lions in the Galapagos Islands, enjoying their 2 houseboats, 1 airplane, 3 travel trailers, panning for gold in Alaska, piloting a barge in France while drinking coffee and many more adventures.
Jahn loved: his family, pie, all dogs, one cat, all desserts, the smile and hug of a child, lefse, Esther's chili, eggadosis, singing Norwegian songs with his still-strong voice, nature, reading a good mystery or Western, AFS (American Field Service) students, learning and teaching, fixing anything, Norwegian humor, telling a good joke, flying his airplane, Norwegian Christmas with the family, the northern Wisconsin woodlot, the Green Bay Packers, entertaining the great/grandkids and more pie.
He loved us. We loved him. His legacy continues through all of us.
Thank you God for this incredible man! We look forward to seeing him again!
The celebration of Jahn's life will be held on Saturday, July 25 at the Middleton Community UCC (United Church of Christ), 645 Schewe Rd., Middleton, WI 53562. There will be a visitation at 4:00 pm, a celebration of Jahn's life at 5:00 pm followed by a light meal at 6:00 pm.

"I so enjoyed visiting Jahn with three different Golden Retrievers since 1993. Kattepuss didn't seem to mind them trying to play with her toys.
Jahn had wonderful stories to share. One common connection was my Norwegian father who had been a dentist in the Korean War. My dad's father carved a wooden mug, not quite as old as Jahn and Esther's Norwegian keepsake mug.
Jahn and Esther graciously hosted a yearly neighborhood get-to-gather in their backyard. Kids would roast marshmallows in the inviting fire pit.
Jahn and Esther would attend our home gatherings and chat with my mother and other neighbors. Jahn had to scratch our Golden's back above the tail since "the dog couldn't reach it".
Jahn repaired many of our non-working mechanical items. My favorite was our garage "refridgidater". It started back up once he removed a dead mouse from it's fan.
I remember waving to Jahn and Esther as the "Good Neighbors" in the Middleton Good Neighbor Parade.
It is an honor to have known Jahn and the love he shared. "

"I most remember Jahn's great love of animals, including my Sasha, one of those dogs who always stopped by the Tinglums' garage on Maywood Avenue to receive a treat (or two) from Jahn. And I also remember him trapping chipmunks and then riding to the park on his bicycle, cage in hand, to free the chipmunks. "

"Jahn was such a wonderful man who loved his family so much. He was someone you loved to converse with because he was a positive person and loved his community and his church. He was always ready to do anything for his neighbors to lend them a hand. He loved to fix anything he could put his hands around.
Most of all Jahn was a good person with a wonderful chuckle and never said anything bad about anybody. He was always interesting to talk with at church or in his yard. People loved to stop to talk with him.
If more people could emulate this great man, what a better world this would be. We all are going to miss you Jahn. Thanks for the wonderful memories and for the lovely family you and Esther raised. You will always share a warm place in my heart."

"To the Tinglum family ..
Few of you know me, but I knew Jahn. I worked as Department of Natural Resources forester in Black River Falls from 10/79 until my retirement in 2/14. I assisted Jahn during the 1980's & 1990's with implementing 2 or 3 commercial red pine plantation thinnings on his 20 acre woodlot in Alma township, Jackson County. If he was involved with the Managed Forest Law or the American Tree Farm program, I was with him on those programs too.
One quick story ... While marking the plantation for a thinning, Jahn shows up and walks up the trail on the west side of the property; he asks me if I had seen where the dog was buried on the top of the hill. I don't recall if I saw the burial site, but suffice it to say, I walked somewhat gingerly over the area as I continued my duties. I'm a dog lover too.
Jahn was one of those all too few landowners that actually implemented and completed proposed commercial harvests that were designated on private lands. He was always respectful of the limited time and resources a state forester could put on his land. Jahn followed through on his end to get the work done and I am grateful for it. The Tinglum family can rest assured that his woods were managed in a sustainable fashion for the future.
I was saddened to read his obituary from my residence in Tomah. Jahn was a friendly woodland owner that made my job worth doing. The photo is how I remember him; I will miss his kind words.
My condolences to the family during this difficult time.

"Jahn Tinglum was one a few people in my life that had a huge impact on me. I was a mathematics student when he taught Algebra I and II over a two year period,at John Edwards High School in Port Edwards, Wisconsin. I have told Jahn and many others that he was the best teacher I ever had at all levels of my education. Jahn was a perfectionist and somehow changed me from being a careless student to excel as I worked on Algebra problems. It was necessary for me to take College Algebra my first year in college and I believe I knew as much as did my professor. He taught us all at JEHS so much more about life as well, such as integrity and how to work well with others. His character and personality was the perfect example for all of us. He was always willing to stay after school or come early to help those of us having problems. In later years, we would invite him and Ester to our class reunions and they would come. He always said he would come "iff'n the good Lord is willin' an' the crick don't rise". Jahn had a tremendous effect upon so many people in Port Edwards. We will miss him very much."

Jahn and I first met in 1976 when we were selected to represent our respective state agency employers on the Wisconsin Building Code Advisory Review Board. Jahn chaired the Review Board for a number of years until his retirement. It was an honor and privilege to have served with Jahn on that Board.
In short time, Jahn and I became good friends especially after we learned that we both were Red Cross plasma apheresis donors. Jahn became a regular plasma donor for my wife, Mary, and did so for many years. Jahn and Esther and Mary and I became friends. When Jahn retired in 1985, he and Esther considered building a new retirement home for themselves. As an architect, Jahn asked if I would design the home for them and prepare the plans. Eventually, they decided not to build and stayed in their long time home in Middleton.
He was a great man, truly giving and unselfish and a great friend. Mary and I will miss him. Our sympathies, condolences and prayers go out to Ester and the entire Tinglum family.

To the entire Tinglum family, we share your sadness at the passing of Jahn. Of course we consider ourselves as family since Jahn,s son Hillis and our daughter Cathy are married and have enhanced & blessed both families with two grandchildren and two great grand children. The only
regret is due to distance of not being able to spend much more time with Jahn and Esther. Jahn was a funny guy that liked a good a joked and was quick to tell one. The best way that I can describe him is that he was truly a
gentle man and always a gentleman. Jahn, you were
always my favorite Norwe, Norwi, Norwig, You know what I mean. Heck everyone can spell Spanish.
P.S. God got a good one"
