Fred Hord, 70, of Lighthouse Point, FL passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 in the comfort of his home with all his loving family surrounding him. Formerly from northern Virginia, Fred was a South Florida resident for over 40 years. The son of John Hord and Nina Knight, Fred was a graduate of Virginia Tech and held an MBA from Florida State. He was an entrepreneur and founder of HPE Automation Corp, managing this business for over 35 years. He is survived by his devoted wife Karen, his older son Brian (Megan) and baby grandson Jackson, and his younger son Eric (Mekenzie) who all reside locally and will continue to manage the family business. Additionally, he has a brother Jack Hord of Ft Walton Beach. While Fred enjoyed the challenge of his business, his passion was playing golf for fun with his family and friends. He impacted so many in his life that he will be impossible to forget. Fred's truly-genuine spirit and memory will carry on through everyone who had the opportunity to know him, and he will be greatly missed. To honor him and his love of helping young people, in lieu of flowers please send memorial contributions to the FIRST TEE of BROWARD, c/o Westin Hills Country Club, 2600 Country Club Way, Westin, FL 33332. A Celebration of Life will be held at Fred Hunter's Funeral Home 4650 N. Federal Highway, Lighthouse Point, FL 33064 on Sunday November 22 from 2 - 4:00 pm with service beginning at 2:30 pm. Family visitation immediately following at his home.
"Our prayers go out to you and your family. He will be missed. "
"It's not often that someone you have never met before strikes you as someone you have known forever. I met Fred at an EWGA party for volunteers. Though I might have only spent a few brief moments with him, I have always since remembered his smile and his warm friendly personality. Thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family Karen. Godspeed Fred."
"My favorite story about Fred reaching out to help others was when Hurricane Wilma hit S.Florida. He was on a business trip, so could not fly back into FLL airport. He flew into Orlando, where I drove up to meet him. The next day he rented a U-Haul truck and drove to every Lowe's and Home Depot Store and bought 5-6 generators, dozens of 3-gal red gas cans, lots of extension cords, jugs of water, and several propane tanks. We loaded these in the U-Haul and drove to a gas station and filled up all the gas cans. Then I followed him back to HPE in Deerfield - not too closely due to all the flammables (don't tell U-Haul) - where we unloaded the supplies and gave our employees the generators, extension cords, gas and water to take home. What was left we gave to our neighbors. "
"Dear Karen, Brian and Eric, I am deeply saddened by our loss of Fred. I have known him for over 40 years and he has always been a bright spot in my life. Fred was always smiling, with a joke and a laugh up his sleeve and with a warm heart. I think of Fred every year at the King Mango Strut, a parody parade in Coconut Grove. An annual entry is "The Freds", a group of people who enter and march the parade in celebration of their name, Fred! They are a happy group, just as your Fred was a happy man. Fred leaves a hole in his world, but we must fill it with fond memories of him. May he rest in peace. Pat"

"Karen, Brian, and Eric, Sandy's and my thoughts and prayers are with you through this difficult time. I have known Fred for over 44 years going back to graduate school at FSU. When we lived in south Miami, Fred came to our rescue after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. He brought a tarp for our roof, a window air conditioner, a generator and much more. He was there in our time of need because that was the kind of friend he was. We also had some great times in college and after when we were bachelors in Miami in the early 70's. My wife Sandy and I will be celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving. We will miss Fred and give thanks for knowing him and his friendship. Best wishes, "
