Jean Lyman Meints

Jean Lyman Meints died January 1, 2016 at Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in Hampton, IA.

Dolorse Jean Marburger was born February 29, 1916 on a farm near Springview, Nebraska to Oscar and Hazel (Weddel) Marburger. She attended school in Chadron, Nebraska and Rapid City, SD and was graduated from Keya Paha County High School, Springview, Nebraska in 1934 with Normal Training credentials. She taught rural school.

In 1940 she married Stoddard Lyman. Following his return from military duty in 1945, they purchased and operated a grocery store/locker plant/produce station in Springview until 1959. In 1960 they moved to Hampton, Iowa, where they purchased a Western Auto store which subsequently merged with two other Hampton businesses to become Hampton Distributing. Jewell Distributing and Stratford Distributing were also opened. Following Stoddard's death in 1977, Jean continued working in the family business until her retirement.

Jean married John Meints July 7, 1984. Following his death, she continued to live in their home in Hampton. She enjoyed her family, gardening, nutrition, and cards. Jean was a member of Garden Club, Mother's Club, and United Methodist Church. She served on the Hampton Community Housing board. She was an avid reader of the daily newspaper and enjoyed the word jumble puzzles. In December 2014 she moved to Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Survivors include daughters Rebecca (Dick) Keidel of Wayne, NE and Julianne Atkinson of Minneapolis, MN and son John (Joy) Lyman of Hampton, IA; grandson Jeffrey Keidel of Lincoln, NE; granddaughters Bethany (Rick) Smart of North Yarmouth, ME Carolyn (Adam Popp) Atkinson of Minneapolis, MN Tracy Atkinson of Colorado Springs, CO Alexis Sheppard (Brandon Grefe) and Lindsay (Lance) Uhlenhopp of Hampton, IA; five great-granddaughters, Ksenia and Annika Smart, Elle and Aja Sheppard, Mila Grefe; and three great-grandsons, Madden and Griffin Uhlenhopp and Murphy Popp; brother O.D. Smith of Olathe, Kansas; longtime friend and aunt by marriage, Doris Weddel; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Stoddard Lyman and John Meints, and her sister Janice Robbins.
