In loving memory of

Eugene M. Meister
November 5, 1947 - February 22, 2016

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a scholarship that has been established in Gene and his son, Bradley's name.

Eugene Marvin Meister was born to Bernard and Thelma (Cox) Meister in Carroll on November 5, 1947. Growing up he attended school at Portland Township Country School. Eugene then attended school in Burt and graduated from St. John's Bancroft in 1965. After graduation he attended Mason City Community College and later graduated from Upper Iowa University.

On June 7, 1969 Eugene was married to Mary Ann Goetz at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley. The couple moved to Lake Mills and that summer he coached baseball at Thompson High School. That fall he taught and coached (football, wrestling, and baseball) at Lake Mills High School.
He then attended graduate school at Northwest Missouri State, graduating with his Master's Degree in 1972. The family then moved to Cherokee as he worked for Immaculate Conception Parish. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Boxholm, where Eugene taught and coached. In 1978 he completed his Ed Specialist degree from the University of Missouri.

In 1980 Eugene and Mary Ann moved back to the family farm in rural Burt. He then coached and taught at St. John's Bancroft Catholic School, as well as farmed with the family. In the summer of 1988 Eugene accepted a position as curriculum director at Bishop Garrigan Catholic School. During his time at Bishop Garrigan he served as Business Manager, Principal and President (he was the first lay President). In addition, he served on the State Nursing Board, an appointment from Governor Branstad. He was proud to have served in Catholic Schools the last 34 years in Education before retiring in 2013.

Eugene was very proud of all the young men he mentored and coached. He accomplished some amazing things in his coaching career: 2 state baseball championships, 11 state appearances, several conference and district championships and ended up with 976 wins. He was inducted into the Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1996 and received several Coach of the Year awards for Districts, State and CYO.

Eugene enjoyed farming, traveling, hiking in the Colorado Mountains, activities at school and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He was faith-filled as he read daily prayer, biblical reflections and Liturgy of the Hours. For years he and Mary Ann had a Chapel hour at St. Cecelia Parish. As a family, Gene was able to get them to 2 Papal Masses with John Paul II.

Eugene died on Monday, February 22, 2016 at KRHC in Algona, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 68 after a courageous 6 ½ year battle with cancer.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years Mary Ann. Son Robert and Wendi and their children Andrew, Mackenzie, Madison and Bailey. Son Mark and Jennifer and their children Bradley and Audrey. Brother William (Shirley) and son Ken. Sister-in-law Linda (Don) Agostine and sons Brett, Corey and Dennis. Brother in law Earl (Carol) Goetz and children Greg, Troy, Susan and Jeff. Sister in law Sr. Mary Janet Goetz. Brother in law Mark (Mary) Goetz, sister in law Jean (Jeff) Bergo and their children Rhea, Jeff and Jonathan.

He was preceded in death by his son Bradley Eugene (2002), his parents Bernard and Thelma, his brother Dennis and In Laws Phillip and Lorrine Goetz.

Tributes

Brooks Taylor wrote on Aug 9, 2016:

"To the Meister family: I know I am terribly late on this and it probably won't be ready by those for whom it is intended. However, I will feel better for penning a few words. I actually accidentally found this. I had thought about Gene several times in the last week and decided to do a Google search. Sadly, I landed here. Even though Gene and I hadn't had much communication in recent years, the conversations we had in years past are treasured memories. Gene and Mary Ann are godparents to my oldest daughter, and I enjoyed every minute I spent in their company. I remember the many conversations in the locker rooms at Marshalltown at the state tournament while he was coaching at Bancroft St. John and those leaning on the school bus after the last out was in the books. My favorite story, however, was when I was at Pocahontas and attended a Pocahontas-Garrigan game in Algona. If memory serves me correctly, it was not Garrigan's night. Along about the fourth inning my cellphone rang, it was Gene on the other end, calling from the dugout. "Get out there and warm up," he said while laughing. I have many good memories of Gene, Mary Ann, Bernard and Thelma, Sr. Janet, and the Meister children that now become treasures. I am a better person for knowing him and them."

"As I reflect on Gene's life and his unwavering dedication to the Bishop Garrigan Schools, I can't stop thinking about the fact that he and Diane Elbert passed from this life on the same day -- 3 years apart. God certainly declared black and gold day on February 22! From the Catholic song of farewell in this Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy: May the choirs of angels come to greet them; may they speed them to paradise...May the Lord enfold them in His mercy, may they find eternal life+++"

"I was so sorry to hear about Coach Meister's passing. He was my baseball coach at Lake Mills in 1970-71. His knowledge of baseball was second to none. He taught us not just the fundamentals, but also the little things that would win ballgames for us. He was not much older than myself and my teammates at the time, but he had our total respect. He truly wanted each of us to be the best we could be. The time he would spend with us individually to improve our game was very much appreciated. When myself and my friends get together occasionally, we still talk about Coach Meister and what we learned from him. You never forget your baseball coach. Especially a good one like Coach Meister. I am truly sorry for your loss. "

During that year, we four were inseparable even to the extent that he ate together every evening, alternating between our homes. With regard to Catholic education, he was a titan, a leader, and a visionary. On the baseball field, he was a Hall of Fame coach: a leader and a mentor of young men. He had a monumental impact on my life and on the lives of countless others. As a baseball player, he taught me more about life than anything else.
