Marc Siem wrote on Jun 19, 2016:

"Darrell and I both lived in Goodview, and attended Phelps grade school. Even though he was two grades ahead of me (A huge difference in those growing years), Darrell made a permanent impression of who he was back in Seventh grade. One day after school, Darrell rode up our driveway on his bicycle. He handed me my homemade wallet (sewn by my mother), and said, "Hi Marc; I found this on the bus. I've seen you use it in the lunch line, and knew it was yours." I had not even noticed it was missing from my pocket, and he had returned it within the hour. My entire personal fortune of two dollars was still inside. This showed me two things that have always been characteristic of Darrell: His powers of observation were very strong, which would serve well during his years in Law Enforcement. And, most importantly: This was who Darrell was -Totally honest, and wanting to always treat others as he would want to be treated. At an age when some kids would have thought "finders keepers", and kept the money, Darrell would not even think of doing so, and went out of his way to ride several blocks and return what he knew wasn't his. This speaks so well of how Darrell was raised, and the values he instilled in everyone else. I miss You Darrell, Marc Siem "

Larry Vongroven wrote on Jun 18, 2016:

"I was lucky to meet Darrell way back in 1967 at Winona Area Technical School, and immediately knew he was one of the 'good guys' you meet all too seldom in your life. I went to the Army after school and when I returned, found my friend Darrell and his girlfriend Kathy when I went to work at J.C. Penney's in 1970. Not long after that I found that Darrell was a Deputy and several years later I too became a Deputy, but with La Crosse county Sheriff. We had infrequent contact for years but after I retired, I found Darrell handing out copious (but dubious) fishing advise including some of his 'most productive' locations to a patron at the hardware store. It was just as if all those years melted away, as Darrell was still that same 'good guy' who was just a familiar as that favorite old fishing shirt. I am so sad that he didn't have more time to enjoy his retirement and light a few more candles in the dark corners of this life, but rejoice in having known him, shared respect and vision of the honor we were given to be law officers. Darrell left this world a better place in ways none of us will ever be able to measure or understand. I am humbled to have called him Friend.-"
