Huot, Charles E. "Gene" Jr.
MADISON - Charles (Gene) Eugene Huot Jr., age 87 of Madison, passed away on Sunday October 16, 2016 at Brookdale Madison West.
He was born on November 21, 1928 in Superior, WI, the son of Katherine and Charles E. Huot Sr. Their family lived and worked in Superior, WI where they owned a restaurant and soda fountain called Huot's. He worked at the family restaurant serving kids from Superior High including his future wife. In the summers the Huot family spent many fun filled days at their cabin in Lake Nebagamon, WI. Here he meet his wife Bernice (Bernie) Marie Hildebrandt, where her family owned a dairy farm. Gene served in the Korean War and after returning home he rekindled his relationship with Bernie and they were united in marriage on Veterans Day, November 11, 1950.
After they married and moved to Madison, Gene got a job working for Gisholt Machine Company. He also worked at the Avenue Bar and Top Hat bartending, and at Struck & Irwin servicing vehicles, to enable Bernice to stay home and raise their two daughters. Gene worked for Gisholt until the foundry closed. He worked for a short time at WPS. He then finished out his career working for the University of Wisconsin.
After the birth of their two daughters they bought their first house on Admiral Drive, Monona in 1956. When the kids were grown they moved to Loretta Court, Madison. The family never lost their love for northern Wisconsin, spending most summers in Lake Nebagamon.
When Gene was not working he could be found eating good food, drinking a few spotted cows and challenging someone to a game of pool at a local watering hole. He enjoyed time spent on the golf course and in bowling leagues. He went fishing and deer hunting in the fall. He loved cheering on the Packers, Badgers and Brewers. Gene and Bernie were members of the Madison Motorcycle Club and enjoyed Harley Davidson motorcycle trips with their Harley buddies. After retirement they spent time finding new bars and places to hang out as well as going to Ho-Chunk playing the slots. Gene was known for his BEER hat which started many conversations and he made new friends wherever he went.
In November of 2015 Gene moved to Brookdale West Assisted Living due to declining health and to be closer to his wife Bernie, who had suffered a stroke in August of 2014. He lost his "brown eyed beauty" in April 2016.
The family would like to thank everyone at Brookdale West for caring for Gene in his time of need. We also want to thank Agrace Hospice Care for all your time and care.
Gene is survived by his daughters Donna (Greg) Parsons of Westport, WA and Debbie (Jerry) Swain of Middleton; grandchildren Kari (Keb) Guralski of Lake Tomahawk and Lindsay Swain of Denver, CO; great grandchildren Josephine and August Guralski. He was preceded in death by his wife Bernie, his parents Katherine and Charles E. Huot Sr. and his sister Charlene Tabor of Corpus Christie, TX.
