"I studied Tai Chi for several years with Domingo Tiu in Madison, WI. He would drive up from Chicago to teach us perhaps once a month. He was a great teacher and a wonderful human being."

Domingo Tan Tiu was born April 11, 1942 in China, and grew up in Marikina, Philippines. He attended Chiang Kai Shek High School and University of Santo Tomas where he studied architecture and played collegiate soccer. In 1965, he moved to the United States and settled in Illinois - living in Chicago, Oak Park, Algonquin and Park Ridge. While in Chicago, Domingo attended Illinois Institute of Technology where he continued his architectural study and also met his wife Susana in 1965; they married in 1968. After graduating with his Masters in Architecture, Domingo worked for Wendell Campbell Associates (WCA) and focused on affordable housing and urban renewal projects in the 1970's. During this time, Domingo and Susana started a family. In 1998, WCA was renamed Campbell Tiu Campbell when Domingo became partner. In 2012, Domingo and Susana moved to the Seattle area to help care for their newest grandchildren.
Domingo was a valued mentor to many architects during his professional career, and he also taught Tai Chi to countless students in the Oak Park and Hindsale area for nearly four decades. A lifelong teacher and mentor, Domingo loved to spend time coaching his children's soccer teams, teaching his grandchildren how to master Sudoku, playing Mahjong with friends and family, sketching and traveling around the world with Susana.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Susana; sons Alvin (Tanya Meyer), Eastman (Julie), and daughter Ines (Greg) Feiereisel and seven grandchildren he adored - Ethan, Ryan, Abigail, Oliver, Ella, Emily, and Gabrielle. Domingo's brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and extended family and friends will miss him dearly, though his spirit will live on through his architectural designs, the memory of his smiling eyes, cheerful greetings, contagious laugh, optimistic outlook, and commitment to helping others.
He passed in peace, surrounded by his wife and children, on December 12, 2016 in Bellevue, Washington.
We love you, Pops.

"To my Teacher, Thank you for opening my eyes to a consciousness above the Heavens. To opening a Healing Energy to deal with old age and many athletic injuries. For letting me be part of your Family. Norm Scharf"
"I studied Tai Chi with Mr. Tiu for about three years in Oak Park ... and again briefly in Hinsdale. He was a wonderful teacher, deeply knowledgeable and generous with his knowledge. He set the bar high and provided both discerning critique and patient encouragement. He was a mensch--a good, solid man who had his feet on the ground and who clearly led a rich and satisfying life outside the studio. That last meant a lot to me. He was my leader. He was my teacher. And he has been a guiding light to me in spirit decades after my classes with him. And so he shall remain. - M. Rogalski, Chicago"
