"Mr. Scherer had such a unique passion for teaching. His excitement about mythology could not be matched and every class he taught involved higher level thinking skills which challenged us to expand our minds more and more each day. He had such a positive impact on me when I knew him at KHS and that has never been forgotten.

"Mr. Scherer was my Theater Arts teacher senior year. It was hands down my favorite class. Not because I always loved the subject matter, but because I loved the teacher. Mr. Scherer had a way of bringing such charisma and enthusiasm to every lesson. He always included everyone, even those students like myself who seemed a little lost in their way. Mr. Scherer wanted each of us to see the light in ourselves, the light he was able to see in each of us.
Thank you Mr. Scherer for your huge heart, your kindness, your contagious smile, your dedication and most importantly your light. You touched the lives of so many.
My deepest condolences to your family.
With Love,

"Mr. Scherer was the best teacher I ever had. His passion for literature, theater, education, and the arts was tangible in his classroom. He didn't just teach me the words off of a textbook page, but rather, made me look at the world differently. I think that is the hope of most teachers, that your lessons go beyond the school walls. Mr. Scherer's most certainly did. He made me want to explore the world I inhabited and instilled a desire to be a life long learner. Mr. Scherer is part of the reason I became a teacher. I always wanted to be Mr. Scherer - a high school English and theater teacher - and that's exactly what I've become. Of course, I am no Mr. Scherer. He was one of a kind. Thank you Mr. Scherer for all that you gave me. You will be sincerely missed by so many. Peace and prayers to your beautiful family.
All my love,
Greta Bowers"

"Mr. Scherer was one of the most incredible teachers to exist. His passion and compassion for both his love of the arts and his students is a gift I feel blessed to have known. He taught us about life and the importance of living it. And he always made his lessons meaningful and fun. One thing he taught me that has always stuck with me is this: "It is more important to be Kind than to be Right. Always choose Kind." I've always remembered that and try to live it to this day. It is so obvious he has touched the lives of so many and will forever be remembered as a truly great man. I am certain he is just as loved in heaven. Sympathies, Love and Prayers to the wonderful family who will miss him so dearly.

"To Nora and Family,
Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of Wendell. I can only imagine the immense loss that you feel.
Wendell was a great man, teacher, and mentor, and I know that I am not alone in expressing this. He was a life saver and an inspiration to me, first as my 9th grade English teacher, and then as mentor and director of the Coach House Explorers for next three years. I like to think that he helped to make me a better person, even though at that time it may not have been apparent. But, he indeed, was an immensely influential force of nature, and I am greatful to have known him.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sorrowful time.

"My sincere condolences for Mr. Scherer's family. Nothing I can say will be news to you as he was truly at the top of all of our "Best Teachers" list. So in tune with where our heads were at and how to get through to us on our terms. Few teachers learn how to bridge that gap and he did it so well. Not only did he focus on the subject matter but the morality he taught still resonates with us all today. Respect for each other was the foundation from which he built upon. I was privileged to be his student at MJM and his lessons are still with me today. "

For me personally, he was a Godsend during a very difficult time in my senior year of high school. After high school he became my friend in addition to that mentor from high school. Wendell introduced me to you - Nora, Sarah and Bettina, and later, Wendell F. I came over for dinner on multiple occasions and spent time with you and the kids and watched them grow in their earlier years. Life changed for me, as life does, and we lost touch but our visits and Wendell's and your friendship never has never left me. Our thoughts, prayers and love to you and the family. "

Mr. Scherer (as we used to call him back in the day) was undoubtedly one of the most influential people...or is it persons? I guess I don't remember his grammar lessons, but much more than that I remember his enthusiasm, humor, love for language, love for life, his dedication and honesty and the uncanny ability to light up a classroom or any room. He opened up my creative and artistic side and taught me how to find the passion in life.
Of course he loved Mythology - he was a God among men!!! Well, I hope that was dramatic enough for him. He deserves every accolade. He was truly and simply the best and I was honored to know him.

"Mr. Scherer was a bright spark of energy and enthusiasm. His classes were always a high point in my middle school day and I remember his infectious positivity and boundless energy with great fondness. When I handed in my final project in his mythology class, I still remember the beaming smile that broke across his face as he shouted "Yes, yes, yes!" and held it up to show the entire class. He then used my project as the example to show subsequent classes. Nothing like this had ever happened to me before, and I was so proud. Being a mediocre English student to that point, I hadn't been motivated to put enough effort in to ace something like that before, and that experience made me want to push for excellence in many other areas.
If I could boil the teachers most important job down into a single item, it would be to inspire their students to strive for excellence.
You did this for me Mr. Scherer, and I will always remember you for it.

"Dear Scherer Family,
Saddened to hear of Wendell's passing. Though I only worked with Wendell for a short time, I remember well my first introduction. [this is for you, Kit] Always so friendly and warm and not grouchy [how did he do it?], I introduced myself and pointed out that I was friend's with his sister, and asked him if he was as funny as she...then I told him how Kit would chant "snow day" in June...he laughed with me and then said, "no, I don't think I'm nearly as funny..." I told him I would give him some time to work on that...always a smile then whenever I passed him in the halls.
As I read these condolences, all I can think is how lucky we all are to have known him, to have been taught and inspired by him, to have laughed with him.One of the best perks of being a teacher is our legacy. Wendell will live on forever in the hearts of his kids-that's for sure. And all of us. Thanks, Wendell.

He would set special days for us to bring our "45 rpm" records to school and he would let us play them and sing, we had so much fun! At the end of the school year I will never forget what happened. Mr. Scherer called my mother and asked if he could take me shopping to buy me a present! He told her that he wanted to get me something because I had the highest grade average of all the students he had that year. What a different time it was! My mom had no problem with it so he picked me up at home and we went to Britts Dept Store in Kingston Plaza. He bought me Rod Stewart's album "Every Picture Tells A Story". I have never forgotten this. Mr. Scherer made a lasting impact on my life and I will never forget him. Many years later he came shopping in my bookstore. I took theater Arts w Mr Scherer and wow did this guy have energy.( I'll try to make this short) but I was a behind the scenes kid, and during a play rehersal one of the lead roles was sick, he yelled Benjamin come here, whispered a few motivating words, I told him no no no he whispered a few more and boom I was the new lead role. I love this guy, I was in another play, he truly brought me out of my shell. I signed up immediatly to be in all the classes he taught, folk tales, mythological journeys and I belive there was another. Who wants to take a class called mythological 1st period, but the energy this man had, I couldn't keep my eyes off him, from jumping on tables to draw our attention to shouting and involving us in the stories. I am now a owner of a gym and personal trainer but recently was in a movie and have done small roles since high school and I give him all the credit. Don't worry I did see him some years back and told him what a impact on me he had, I couldn't let him go on not knowing and for myself as well. Mr Scherer will forever be my all time favorite teacher and he will forever live in every student he has taught, may he rest in peace

Being a student of his, I consider to be one of the very few sincere privileges I have had in my life, I wish my own children were able to experience his passion. And here is something that I have never even told him... English was my least favorite subject! But yet I looked forward to being in his class each and every day. He taught unconditionally, it didn't matter if you were an A+ or a D- student, your color, race or religion, if you were popular or not, you received the same amount of love from him. It is about 35 years since I have been in a classroom of his and yet his passion and zest for life still has an impact on me today and always will. Considering the amount of years that he taught, I think it is safe to say that he was adored and will be missed by thousands. As I sit here thinking, I honestly cannot think of another person that I could make the same statement for. May God Bless you all, my prayers are with you. On the last day of school I said it just so I wouldn't be the only one in the class who didn't. I accepted my punishment and stood in front of the class and apologized. It is hard to articulate the impact Mr. Sherer had as a teacher. This might be somewhat anecdotal, but I never took a class with Mr. Sherer or even had a long conversation with him. However, I often learned about a variety of topics, particularly mythology, from students that took his classes. He brought out such a passion within his students, so much so that many of them would be discussing the topic throughout the day. I am certain many people are still learning about literature from his students.
