Gilbert K. Richter
May 22, 1919 - July 16, 2010

Gilbert K. (Kellerman) Richter formerly of Hurley died on July 16, 2010 at The Meadows at Edgewood in North Andover, MA.




Gil was born in Kingston, New York on May 22, 1919 to the late Burton and Esther (Kellerman) Richter. He graduated from Kingston High School in 1937. Following graduation he attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York and graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics in 1941. He met Helen D. LeFevre, also of Kingston while they were both students at St. Lawrence. They were married on July 2, 1941.




Gil went to work for General Electric in Schenectady, NY immediately after graduation and worked at GE in Schenectady, Boston, MA, and Lynn, MA until his retirement in March 1982. His service to GE was briefly interrupted by service in the Army from December 1942 until his honorable discharge in April 1944. While working in Lynn the family lived briefly in Peabody, MA and then in Reading, MA for 32 years. He received a Masters Degree in Education from Northeastern while he was employed by GE. After retiring Gil and Helen returned to New York and lived in Hurley until 2008 when they both moved to Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover, MA.




Gil volunteered in many activities and organizations throughout his life. While in Reading he served as the Director of Sunday Schools and on the Board of Christian Education at the First Congregational Church. After returning to New York he served on the Board of the YMCA Of Kingston, the Board of the Senate House, the Board of the Hurley Historical Society and Museum, the Board of the Hurley Library and on the Board of the Senior Citizens of Hurley.




He was a collector of antiques and enjoyed researching the history of his home in Hurley. He also enjoyed researching the history of the Hurley/Kingston area. He loved participating in Hurley's Old Stone House Day and the Heritage Society's Corn and Craft Festival.




He is survived by his wife of 69 years Helen D. LeFevre, his son Douglas and his wife Leslie of Shelton, CT, and his daughter Linda and her husband David Anderson of North Andover, MA. Gil and Helen have one grandchild Scott Richter also of Shelton, CT.




Also among Gil's survivors are his sister Evamae McClenahan of Rhinebeck, NY and several nieces and nephews. His brother Hubert Richter of Kingston, NY predeceased him.




A Memorial Service will be held at the Reformed Church of Hurley on Saturday, July 24, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Reformed Church of Hurley, PO Box 328, Hurley, NY 12443 or Merrimack Valley Hospice, 360 Merrimack St, Lawrence, MA 01843.
