June Iva Higgins was born on June 14, 1918, in Rock Island, IL, the daughter of James E. And Eunice H. Darling Gardner. She was adopted on March 2, 1921, by Fred and Emma Mittman. June grew up in Muscatine, IA. and then worked as a housekeeper for the Caroline Liebbe family. She was united in marriage to Warren Wilson (Bill) Higgins on November 8, 1943, in Brooklyn, IA. They made their home in Keswick where June worked as a school cook at the Keswick Elementary School for 18 years. She retired in May 1984. June was a former member of the Keswick United Methodist Church and Martha Circle and the Fort Madison Christian Church. She liked to embroidery, loved music, and had a great sense of humor. She was known for her pies, chocolate chip cookies and homemade cinnamon rolls. Warren preceded her in death in August 1973. June became a resident of Hillview Village in Fort Madison in 1988, and to the West Point Care Center in June of 2003. She died there on Sunday, March 15, 2009, following a brief illness. She lived 90 years, 9 months and 1 day. She is survived by a son Fred David Higgins ( Elsa) of Henderson, NV; daughters: Linda Donahue (Brad) of Des Moines, IA; Julie Winzeler (Ken) of Shalimar, FL; Tracy Kamp (Joel) of Fort Madison, IA; and Jayne Merritt of Hannibal, MO; Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son Michael and two brothers. A Celebration of Her Life Service will be held at the Keswick United Methodist Church in Keswick at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March18, 2009. Rev. John Tunnicliff will officiate. Burial will be in the Sorden Cemetery near Keswick. Visitation will at the church2 hours before the service on Wednesday.
