Orland Roger Nerness was born on August 19, 1918 in rural Kelley to Ole and Rachel (Egemo) Nerness. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church and graduated from Kelley High School in 1936. Orland latered attended Iowa Aircraft School in Des Moines, then went to work for Glen L Martin in Baltimore, Maryland. He married Vivian Carlson on September 27, 1941 in Greenbelt, MD. They returned to farm in the Gilbert and Kelley area, residing in the Kelley area for 37 years. Orland was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and served as a Sunday School teacher and church council member. He enjoyed golfing, sports and high school activities and attending his grandchildren's activities. His family was very important to him. Orland died August 24, 2017 at Northridge Village in Ames at the age of 99. Orland is survived by his wife, Vivian Nerness of Ames; two daughters, Beverly Shaeffer of Huxley and Diane McCauley of Ames; a son, David (Marito) Nerness of Chino Hills, CA; three grandchildren, Mathew Shaeffer, Jessica McCauley and Jackson Nerness; three great grandchildren, Gage, Grant and Tatum Shaeffer and a sister-in-law, Ila Nerness. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Larry Shaeffer; brother Glen Nerness and sister, Mildred (Bud) Brendeland. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church.
