Jean Chandler Hughes, 91, of Bothell, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017, at the Redmond Care and Rehabilitation Center. Jean was born on April 9, 1926, in Lansing, MI, the daughter of Wallace and Florence (Lucas) Chandler. Jean was a graduate of Michigan State University, where she earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Gerald Hughes, her brother, Wallace Chandler, and three sisters, Mabel Alice Duch, Flora Louise Lyon and Mary Beth Edmonston.
Jean traveled widely, and lived in the African countries of Nigeria, and Ghana, as well as Barbados in the West Indies, and Argentina. Jean lived for several years on the family orchard in Royal City, WA, and later owned a small house overlooking the Columbia River in Beverly, WA. Jean moved to Bothell upon retiring. Jean held a wide variety of jobs including teacher and librarian, but was an artist at heart. She will probably be best remembered for her artwork. Jean was a prolific artist, and produced works of art in a wide range of mediums including, but not limited to, oil paints, water colors, fabric art, cartoons, and photography.
Jean is survived by her three sons: Kurt Hughes, Bothell, WA, Steve Hughes, Eatonville, WA, and Joe Hughes, Murrieta, CA, as well as numerous grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) Foundation. A private memorial service celebrating Jean's life was held on December 29, 2017.
