On September 1, 2017, Harriet Adell (Cook) Streets departed from Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue to eternally join Gene, her husband of almost 72 years.
A celebration of Harriet's life will be conducted by Pastor Judy Heinrich at First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa, on Friday, September 8 at 11 A.M. Friends and family may gather prior to the service from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at First Lutheran Church. Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa is caring for the family. In accordance with Harriet's wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. Burial will be at Cady Cemetery, Wyoming, Iowa, at a later date.
Harriet Adell Cook was born to 1st Lt. Joseph and Nell (Sullivan) Cook on July 11, 1924 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she remained during her youth. At the age of 17, on January 25, 1942, she and Eugene R. "Gene" Streets eloped in Kahoka, Missouri. They became parents to their daughter Pamela on August 6, 1949.
Harriet spent her early married years at various jobs until her daughter was born. She loved working in the yard and took great pride in her gardens. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf, boating and traveling. Each year she looked forward to traveling to Lake Okoboji where she started going as a young girl. Harriet was known for her famous potato salad, zucchini bread, delicious cookies, her quick wit, and earning the nickname of "Sarge". She was definitely "one of a kind".
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Gary Eggers of Maquoketa; grandchildren, Shane (Katrina) Whaley of MI, Shelby (Wayne) Scharff of Maquoketa, Seth Whaley of Maquoketa, Paul (Annette) Eggers of Dubuque, Jon (Carrie) Eggers of Andrew, Ben (Jamie) Eggers of TN, Elizabeth Eggers of Maquoketa, Larry Eggers of Cedar Rapids, Carlos Eggers USMC stationed in SC, Gilbert Eggers of Maquoketa, Alex Eggers of Cedar Rapids, and Pam (PJ) Eggers of Story City; 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Margaret Cook; along with cherished nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gene on September 11, 2013, sisters Phyllis and Shirley, and a very special niece, Sandra (Turner) Wescott.
Memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa or Hospice of Jackson County.
