Salvatore Ottaviano, age 85, of the Holiday City section of Berkeley Township died peacefully on Monday, September 18, 2017 at the Holiday Care Center in Berkeley.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, he and his wife raised their growing family in Staten Island living there for more than 30 years until moving to Bayville in 2001. Upon retirement, he and his wife also wintered in Port St. Lucie, FL and settled in Holiday City in 2012. As a young man, Mr. Ottaviano served honorably in the US Navy during the Korean War, and later served in both the US Army Reserve, US Navy Reserve and the NJ National Guard. He retired from the New York City Department of Sanitation in 1990, after having been employed for over 20 years. Earlier in his career, he was employed by Pepsi-Cola as a mechanic. He was a member of the Toms River Elks, and was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 10899 achieving Gold Honorary Life Membership.
He was predeceased by his brother, Vincent, earlier this year. He is survived by his wife, Roselyn; five children, Josephine Ottaviano of Staten Island, Ralph and his wife Maryann of Raleigh, NC, Anthony of Mount Vernon, NY, Salvatore and his wife Laura of Barnegat, and Margherite of Brooklyn; his grandchildren, Christopher, Anna Roselyn and Salvatore; and his sister, Rose Panaro of Staten Island, NY.
Visitation will be Thursday and Friday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm each day. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday at 9:30 am at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Toms River. Cremation will be private, and interment of Mr. Ottaviano's cremated remains with military honors will take place at the Brig. Gen. W. C. Doyle Veteran's Memorial Cemetery at a date to be determined.
