Bancroft - John R. McGuire, 68, of Bancroft, died Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, surrounded, in vigil, by his family.
A funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10:30 AM at St. John's Catholic Church, Bancroft, with Father Paul Bormann and Reverend Mr. Phil Doocy officiating. Burial will be in the Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Thursday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft with a rosary beginning at 4 PM and a scripture prayer service beginning at 7 PM.
John Richard McGuire was born January 1, 1937 near Bancroft son of Charles W. and Charlotte (Hood) McGuire. He was raised on a farm near Bancroft graduating from St. John's High School in 1955. He then served his country in the United States Air Force for four years stationed at Selfridge Air Force Base in Calumet, Michigan.
John was united in marriage to Patricia Andrene Nyguard on October 9, 1962 in Ely, Nevada. They farmed his family farm north of Bancroft raising grain, cattle, and Tennessee Walking show horses. John served on the St. John's School Board, the St. John's Church Council, and was past president of the Kossuth County Cattlemen's Association and the Bancroft Lions Club. He also was an Iowa High School Umpire enjoying umpiring softball and baseball, and refereeing basketball games.
In high school, John enjoyed playing baseball and was a Golden Glove boxing champion. He also enjoyed bowling, golfing, and had an everlasting love of music. More than anything, John loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and being on the farm.
He was survived by his wife of 43 years, Pat of Bancroft; four children, Mark and his wife Melissa of Bancroft, Shirley Karhoff and her husband Jeff of Richfield, WI, Kevin and his wife Jodi of Bancroft, and Dan and his wife Rachel of Mason City; 11 grandchildren, Anthony, Alissa, Andrew, and Alex McGuire, Rob and Matthew Karhoff, Ashley, Hilary, and Grace McGuire, and Jack and Molly McGuire; eight brothers and sisters, Bill and his wife Ann of Green Valley, AZ, Ann Degen and her husband Don of Bancroft, Tom and his wife Cheryl of Bettendorf, Mary Faith Schiltz and her husband Don of Estherville, Martin and his wife Barbara of Algona, Ed and his wife Jesse of Cherokee, Joe and his wife Carolyn of State Center, and Kristi Brandenburg of Armstrong; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Arlene Nyguard of Lake Mills; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Doyle of West Des Moines; and two brothers-in-law, Phil Nyguard and his wife Joyce of Des Moines and Wayne Nyguard and his wife Judy of Lake Mills.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia Colleen in infancy; a brother-in-law, Steve Brandenburg; and his father-in-law, Silas Nyguard.
