MADISON - Else Marie Solberg, age 89 passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017. She was born April 6, 1928 in Chicago, IL., the daughter of the late Arne and Alvilde Solberg. In 1945 the family bought a farm in Springdale Township, near Mt. Horeb. She attended Kelvyn Park High School in Chicago and graduated in 1945 from Mt. Horeb High School. In 1946 she attended UW Madison and received her BA in 1950 and her Master's Degree in 1956. She taught school in Wisconsin for 37 years in Beaver Dam, Beloit and Monona. Else has been a member of Bethel Lutheran Church here in Madison since June 12, 1983. She loved to read, garden, and traveling extensively to many elder hostels in the U.S. and going to Europe and many trips to Norway.
Else is survived by her nephews, Kirk (Katherine) Solberg and Eric Solberg, niece-in-law Sheree Solberg; great nieces and nephews, Jessica and Morgan Johnson, Sterling (Alicia) and Signa Solberg, and their mother, Kim Solberg, and Emilee Solberg; and a great-great nephew, Oliver Leif Solberg.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brother Leif (Mary Jane) Solberg, nephew Guy Martin Solberg.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at CRESS FUNERAL HOME, 3610 Speedway Road, Madison with Rev. John Swanson officiating. A visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Mt. Horeb.

A special thank you to Kirk Solberg, neighbor Janice, and all family members and some great neighbors who helped Else to stay home as long as she could. And also Dr. Robert W. Olson who is a wonderful physician and Agrace HospiceCare for their comfort and care.

"I am so sorry to learn of Else's passing. Our friendship spans many decades as I recall family visits to the farm of Arne and Alvilda in the '40's!! Growing up in Beloit we were part of a sizable group of Norwegians and of course Else was teaching in that community. She was always willing to serve coffee and sweets when I visited so many times these last many years and to show off her gardens. She was happy to talk about Leif and his family. I am so sad that I cannot be there for the funeral as I will be in Ohio with my sister. Please accept my sympathy."
