Leo F. Garman was born March 3, 1921, in Sexton, Iowa, the son of Richard and Mary (Kirschbaum) Garman. He attended school in St. Benedict and Wesley before beginning to work on the farm with his brothers. In the early 1940's he moved to San Diego where he worked for Rohr Aircraft and also did some work for Boeing.
On May 20, 1942, Leo was united in marriage to Dorothea Fandel at St. Ann's Catholic Church in San Diego. Leo served in the 12th Infantry of the United States Army and landed on Normandy Beach on June 9, 1944. While serving overseas he was wounded and received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After being honorably discharged in 1945, they moved back to the LuVerne area where Leo went to work for his brother who had a grocery store in Denhart. Leo started farming on his own in 1949, and later moved to Algona in 1960, where he worked at Weidenhoff which later became Snap-On Tools, retiring in 1984.
Leo enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren; playing cards, golf, gardening, horses, bowling, collecting baseball cards and coins. He boxed Golden Gloves and was a past commander of the LuVerne American Legion Post. Leo was a member of the VFW Post #2541, Knights of Columbus Council #952 and St. Cecelia Parish where he was a member of the Adoration Group. Leo enjoyed being a Hospice volunteer and was named volunteer of the year in November of 1990.
Leo died Wednesday, August 22, 2007, at Silvercrest at Woodlands Creek Senior Living Community in Clive, Iowa. He was 86.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothea, of Algona; children, Dwight and Kathie Garman of Topeka, KS; Karen and Howard Thilges of Lincoln, NE; Michael and Denise Garman of O'Neill, NE; Arlene and Merle Elbert of Urbandale; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother Gerald Garman of Algona; brothers-in-law, George Fandel of Virginia Beach, VA; Bill Erpelding of Algona and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Victor, William, Sylvester, Stanislaus, Arthur and Robert Garman and sisters, Caroline Kilian and Leona Erpelding.
