Ronald R. Mertz, 60, of Perry, Kansas formerly of Algona, died November 4, 2007 at his home in Perry Kansas.
Private family graveside service with military honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Algona with Father Paul Eisele officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Haag Turner American Legion Post # 90 and the VFW Post # 2541.
Ron Mertz was born on July 31, 1947 in Algona Iowa son of Ray and Marie (Dahlhauser) Mertz. He spent most of his life in Algona graduating from Bishop Garrigan High School in 1965. After that he attended Barber School in Des Moines Iowa and then served his country in Vietnam returning home in 1969.
He was married shortly thereafter to Jeannie Ewen. They had two children Matt and Katie. Ron worked as a barber at various places and enjoyed cutting hair. He then worked at Hormel Foods in Algona for 17 years. He had his own barber shop that he ran out of his home for a few years before he moved to Perry Ks.
While in Kansas he volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in Topeka Ks for several years, helping other Veterans. Ron enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed taking his boat out and restoring his "51" Chevy. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Ray on March 26, 2002.. He is survived by his two children. Matt Mertz and his wife Kristin of Bode, IA and Katie Mertz of Denver, Colorado and his three grandchildren. Laney, Valorie and Caleb. He is also survived by his mother, Marie Mertz of Missouri; his 6 brothers and sisters. Margene Flint of CA. Kathy (Dave) Hilbert of Missouri, Denny Mertz of Mason City, Rochelle (Dave) Panthen of Nevada IA, Melvin Mertz of Colorado, and Barbara (Denny) Smith of Naples FLA.
