Interment: Union Cemetery ~ Pomeroy, IA

Joann Adel Bangert, 77, of Algona, IA died Wednesday November 12, 2008 at the Algona Care Manor with her family at her side.

She was born on August 16, 1931 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Beulah Jo (Simpson) and Louis C. Larsen. She graduated from East High School as salutatorian and received a Certificate of Graduate Nursing from the University of Iowa in 1952. On August 23, 1952 she married Sherman Glen Bangert at Grace Methodist Church in Waterloo. For the next 30 years, Joann was the consummate officer's wife and mother as she accompanied Sherman to his assigned posts in Colorado, California, Virginia, Texas, Illinois, Kansas and Germany. She loved the travel, seeing new places, meeting new people while supporting Sherman in his dental career and raising her family. Among her travels while in Germany, she enjoyed exploring the cultures in Russia, Spain, Greece and Israel. They finally settled in Leavenworth, Kansas following Sherman's assignment to the dental command post at Ft. Leavenworth. While there, Joann was the head of the health clinic at St. Mary's College and worked to provide students and the Sisters of Charity with health aid, advice and referrals. After 20 years at St. Mary's College, Joann retired to enjoy her many interests, including travels around the United States and the world. She and Sherman were blessed with trips to Alaska, New Zealand, Australia and Egypt. Joann belonged to the Philematheon Club in Leavenworth, KS and volunteered many years with the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, entertaining, playing Bridge and most importantly, wonderful fellowship with close friends.

Her faith sustained her in life's challenges and brought joy in the community she shared with so many in all of the places she lived. She was active in church groups, Bible studies and especially enjoyed singing in church choirs. Her faith also supported her as she struggled with Parkinson's disease.

"To the family of Joann Bangert, Joann & Sherm were special friends. We sang with them in the Fort Leavenworth Chapel Choir for many years. Sherm was still on active duty working on our teeth when we first met them. We also shared many good times when both of our families sponsored Command and General Staff College International officers at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Joann & Sherm were excellent sponsors who truly cared about the familis they sponsored. Our prayers are with you. Sincerely, Margie & Darrell Holland"

Although I (we) never had the pleasure of meeting her, we know that much of her personality must be reflected in the warm, caring person that Sue is. Wishing you comfort and peace knowing your Mom is at rest. Shelly Schueller and Paul Huggett"

"Wow, Sue. The last time I saw your mom was at your wedding. She was king...well..queen of the roost and had everything organized with military precision and a calmness about her even with all the organization and cooking required. Her aging was not as easy as that, unfortunately. You, however, seemed to take on her illness with great grace.....You are also lucky to have brothers and their wives who really have taken on the responsibilities with grace,it seems. Your mom's face is not the one I remember...but her hair is not out of place...that I do!"
