John Francis McShane, Sr., died peacefully, in the presence of his family, on January 13, 2011.
He was born on February 13, 1929, to Patrick J. McShane and Margaret O'Donnell McShane, immigrants from County Donegol, Ireland.
He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1946, and the University of Notre Dame in 1950. Other than his wife and children, his great love was the Notre Dame Football team. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War
Following his graduation from Notre Dame, John worked in real estate purchasing for Humble Oil Company, and later Exxon.
In the 1960's and 1970's, John owned and operated Arena Services, Inc., which provided concession services for sporting events at Butler University and CYO Field.
In his late years, John was a real estate agent for American States Realty, and a salesman for L. Strauss and Jacobsen's.
John was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for nearly forty (40) years.
During that time he helped scores of people overcome their disease, and lead active and successful lives.
Two of John's beloved children, Daniel and Christine, predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife Winifred, his sister Mary Lawlor of Des Plaines, Illinois, and five (5) children: Kevin McShane (Kathryn Niles), Betsy Schmutz (Jerry), John F. McShane, Jr. (Katy), Patrick J. McShane (Stephanie), of New Orleans, Louisiana, Maggie McShane (Brian Hasler), and step-daughter Karen Rachels. His nine grandchildren will miss his constant smile and gentle ways.
Calling will take place on Friday, January 14, 2011 at Crown Hill Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at Geist, on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 11:00 a.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carvel Club, Inc., or Fairbanks Hospital.
The family wishes to express their special gratitude to the Staff of Community Hospital North, for their commitment to John's care during his final days.
