Sidney "Sonny" Land, Jr.

Sidney Theodore "Sonny" Land, Jr., 80, of Keokuk, died Saturday morning, March 29, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Land was born July 27, 1927, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Sidney T. Sr. and Dorothy Hartley Land. He married Viola May Rodgers on December 4, 1955, in Keokuk, Iowa. She preceded him in death on March 12, 2000. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as a crane operator and had been employed by Shellor-Globe and Midwest Carbide. He collected cigarette lighters and enjoyed watching television, especially old westerns.

He is survived by a brother, Wendall Land and his wife, Karen, of Keokuk; a daughter, Dianna Washburn and her husband Keith, of Keokuk, a granddaughter, Nikki Hill and her husband, Harley, of Medill, Missouri; three grandsons, Curtis Washburn and his wife, Rhonda, of Keokuk, Mark Shuler and his wife, Rachelle, of Hamilton, Illinois and Troy Gray of Keokuk; two great granddaughters, Deseree Shuler and Amanda Hymes; two great grandsons, Theodore "Teddy" Burdette and Adam Washburn; six great great grandchildren, Trenton, Chelsi, Brittney, Hailey, Hannah and Natalie; several nieces and nephews; his buddy, Cody, a miniature Yorkshire terrier dog, and Dexter, his cat.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola May Land; a daughter, Barbara Jean Shuler; a granddaughter, Leslie Lynn Gillman; and a brother, Bernard "Bing" Land.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at DeJong's Funeral Home with Brother Bill Hauser officiating. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
