Edith Lelia Hershman, age 94, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:54 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne, IN. Born September 1, 1917 in Cincinnatti, OH, she was the daughter of Fred and Ida (Mullholland) Miess.
She graduated from Emerson High School, Gary, IN with the Class of 1935 and attended Wheaton College for 2 years. On April 11, 1948 she married Lawrence W. Hershman in Crown Point where they established their home. In 1952, she and her family moved to their present Whitley County home. She worked at Magnavox of Fort Wayne retiring in 1980. She also worked as a telephone operator, department store clerk, and substitute teacher. For 60 years, she was a member of Laud Christian Church where she served as organist and pianist. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Club.
Survivors include her 3 sons, Robert Forbes of Chickapee, MA; Lawrence W. and Lewis W. F. Hershman both of Columbia City; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence W. Hershman; 2 daughters, Judith A. Forbes in 1997 and Lynette E. Hershman in 1982; and granddaughter, Amy Ruth.
Visitation will be held from 9-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor James Clifford officiating. Burial will follow at Nolt Cemetery, Columbia City. Memorial gifts may be given in Mrs. Hershman's memory to Laud Christian Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
