Cynthia A. Hertsel, 93, of Columbia City, Ind. passed away at 6:17 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at her home at Millers at Oak Point Assisted Living Facility, Columbia City. Born August 20, 1922 in Whitley County, she was the daughter of George O. and Louella (Stallsmith) Alexander.
She resided in Washington Township during the early years of her life and the last years of her life have been in Columbia City. She graduated from Washington Center High School with the Class of 1940. On September 16, 1940 she married Donald L. Hertsel. She worked 12 years as manager of the Columbia Township School Cafeteria and then two years as a school secretary. She retired in 1987 after 14 years as an administrative secretary to the Whitley County Memorial Hospital. Cynthia was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, United Methodist Womens Society and the Town Country Home Demonstration Club. She had also been active in the United Methodist Senior Program and in the Susanna Circle of Church Women.
Survivors include her children, Gloria (Steve) More, of Columbia City and George (Paula Dean) Hertsel, of Auburn; five grandchildren, Kirk (Barbra) Hertsel, Kent (Andrea) Hertsel, Tricia Hertsel, Jeff (Christy) Chapman and Jen (Mark) Bergdall; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don Hertsel; sisters, Georgia Weir and Evelyn Brower; and brothers, Clare, Harry, Carl, Alton, Fred and George Ray Alexander.
Visitation is Thursday, July 14, 2016 from 3-7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes, a Life Story Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor David Arnold of Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband following the service at Nolt Cemetery.
