Leslie P. Ballinger, 73, of Burlington, died 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Great River Medical Center.
Born August 26, 1944 in Perry, Iowa, he was the son of Len Pearl and Martha (Carpenter) Ballinger. He married Shirley Bixby on April 2, 1966 in Burlington.
Leslie was a repairman for J.I. Case until his retirement in 2006. He was a member of First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ and Des Moines Masonic Lodge #1.
Leslie LOVED street rods! He enjoyed building cars and anything to do with gas engines. He was a faithful attendee to Old Threshers Reunion. He loved camping at Spring Lake, watching NASCAR and football and enjoyed attending street rod shows with his friends. He adored his grandchildren and was affectionately known by many as "Papa Smurf".
Survivors include his wife Shirley Ballinger of Burlington; two daughters, Holly (Jason) Seager of Burlington and Amie (Rodney) McIntyre of Stronghurst, Illinois; four grandkids; one sister, Carolyn (David) Stout of Grimes, Iowa; two brothers, Mark (Dana) Ballinger of Washington, Illinois and David (Jean) Ballinger of Burlington; one sister in law, Sharon Ballinger of High Ridge, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Carl.
The memorial funeral service for Mr. Ballinger will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 26th at First Christian Church ~ Disciples of Christ. The Rev. David Yonker will officiate. A private family inurnment will be held in Greenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the memorial service. The Masonic Rite will be held at 10:00 a.m.
A memorial has been established for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
According to his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to the care of Lunning Chapel.
