"My sympathies to Penny's family. I have known Penny since she was just a little girl. We were neighbors and she was my younger sister's best friend. When my sister became sick, Penny was there to cheer her up. After my sister passed Penny would put a pin wheel on her grave for many many years after. She had such a kind and loving spirit about her. We love you and thank you! Valerie (LePage) Dickinson"

Katie Spurr wrote on Feb 2, 2018:

"I met Penny and Phil long ago while volunteering at Trempeleau Wildlife Refuge when I was a student at St.Mary's and we have been friends ever since. I now live in St.Louis but was lucky enough to visit before Phil passed away. The three of us created a little pond in the front yard together and I'll never forget staying with them and being spoiled rotten with Penny's wonderful cooking. I am so grateful for that time together! Penny and Phil were so kind and their enthusiasm for everything was such a joy to experience. We shared a love of nature and talked on the phone regularly. We loved to share stories of what birds we were seeing that time of the year in our different parts of the country. She'd tell me when the swans passed through and who was visiting her bird feeder with such joy! I'll also never forget how she fed the hummingbirds and had so many buzzing around her yard, it was magical. I'll miss her so much, and her sweet, "Love ya!," before she would get off of the phone. Rest in peace sweet Penny, glad you are now with Phil and Teddy! ( stlrover@gmail.com is my email if anyone would like to share info or memories)"

Lisa Reid wrote on Feb 1, 2018:

"I met Penny when I worked at the Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge and she was volunteering. Her passion for all wildlife was contagious whether she was leading a nature program or greeting visitors at the observation deck. She was eager to show others the wonder of finding wild grapes, watching crawling insects, and following tracks in the snow. I would guarantee that because of Penny there are thousands more people in the world who know that there are many kinds of ducks, not just mallards and brown ones, and that pelicans aren't just found in Florida. Rest in peace, Penny."

"I met Penny at Walmart where I work. We became friends and then a year ago when my husband died, we became closer and would comfort each other. When I saw her last, we talked and I told her, "see you next time and I love you Penny." I never had a clue there would be no next time. She is safe with the Lord and with Phil again, so I know she is happy and at peace, finally. Love and miss you. Vicki Grotjahn"
