Edward Smitmajer
February 1, 1911 - August 20, 2009

Edward Smitmajer, of Polar, died Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Langlade Hospital under the care of LeRoyer Hospice. He was 98 years old. He was born on February 1, 1911 in Chicago, IL to Albert and Josephine (Kolar) Smitmajer. He married Violet Ingalls on May 3, 1950 in Waukegan, IL. She survives.

He attended Lincoln Grade School in Polar and was active in making and delivering moonshine. He farmed in Polar, operated a milk route for 30 years and drove school bus for 25 years, operated a moving company and worked at Polar Country Club. Mr. Smitmajer owned and enjoyed flying his own plane, was a member of the Antigo Flying Club, the Civil Air Patrol and the ZCBJ Lodge 47 where he served as President. He was a regular blood donor to the American Red Cross and enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling.

Survivors including his wife are two daughters, Holly (Frank) Matucheski, Bryant, Cindy (Steve) Rasmussen, Deerbrook, four grandchildren Michele (Christian Long) Matucheski, Oshkosh, Seth Matucheski, student at University of Wisconsin River Falls, Amanda (Yusuke) Yoshida, Japan, Ashleigh DeHart, Monico, three greatgrandchildren Oliver Long, Ailin and Luka Yoshida.

He was preceded in death by parents, two sisters, Vlasta (Ray) Nonnenmacher and Sylvia Slama.

Services will be held on Monday, August 24, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at Bradley Funeral Home with Rev. Omer Kelley officiating. Burial will take place in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday at the funeral home from 3:30 - 7:00 p.m. and on Monday one hour prior to services.
