Richard Van Ooyen
August 27, 1939 - November 29, 2010

Richard R. Van Ooyen Satch, of Antigo, died Monday, November 29, 2010 at home with family at his side. He was 71 years old. He was born on August 27, 1939 in Antigo a son of Roland and Virgie (Crum) Van Ooyen.

He served in the United States Army in the 101st Airborn Division as a paratrooper from Sept. 1956 to June 1959. In 1958 he attended Non Commission Officers School in Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

Mr. Van Ooyen returned to Antigo and married Donna Bauknecht on March 18, 1960. He worked at Lockwood Graders in sales and cost accounting, then at Edleman Meats as a butcher and later was a route salesman for South Side Tire. In April 1976 he started Van Ooyen's J&D Electric with his brother Jim. Later they added Radio Shack, Northern Lakes Scuba and Van Ooyens Self Storage. He retired in 2009 due to health concerns.

He was a member of the Antigo Langlade County Chamber of Commerce, Antigo Scuba Club and the Harley Hog Chapter of Wisconsin.

He enjoyed woodworking, helping family members building their homes, fishing, hunting, camping, boating, snowmobiling, riding Harley's, antique shopping and family vacations.

He was an accomplished scuba diver having attained the status of assistant instructor through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. In the 1960's he played the bass guitar in the Mustangs and Silvertones country music bands throughout the state of Wisconsin.

Survivors including his wife are a son Daniel (Joni) VanOoyen, Antigo; a daughter Diane (John) Holup, Antigo; two grandchildren Zachery (Charlene) Van Ooyen, Pueblo, Colorado and Drew Van Ooyen, Antigo; a great-grandchild due in May 2011; two brothers Harland (Lucille) Van Ooyen, Antigo, Jim (Darlene) Van Ooyen, Antigo; two sisters Betty Fleischman, Antigo, Janet (Fred) Kohlmier, Antigo.

He was preceded in death by his Parents.

Services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Bradley Funeral Home with Rev Kate Kraft officiating. Burial will take place in Pearson Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30-8 p.m. on Thursday and 9 - 10 a.m. on Friday at the Bradley Funeral Home.
