Vern Michael Bailey
January 26, 1946 - April 11, 2018

Vern Michael "Mike" Bailey, 72, of Keosauqua, died April 11, 2018 at Veteran's Hospital, Iowa City. He was born January 26, 1946 in Ft. Madison to Carrol Vern and Mary Lucille Holmes Bailey. December 28, 1974 he married Caroline Kay Robbins in Carthage, Illinois. He attended schools in Ft. Madison and immediately enlisted in the Army serving in Viet Nam.
Mr. Bailey was a member of the NRA, was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, and especially cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was employed by the Van Buren County Sheriff's Department where he was a deputy and chief deputy in law enforcement for 25 years. Many say he was a walking encyclopedia for Iowa law enforcement codes.
He is survived by his wife; his mother of Ft. Madison; four children; Ken (Nancy) Nelson of Salem, Jason (Sherry) Nelson of West Point, Vince (Heather) Nelson of Denmark and Danny (Tabitha) Bailey of Charles City; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and siblings; Danny (Sandy) Bailey of Florida, Paula (Dennis) DeKraai, Barb (Kevin Beach) Bailey, Phillip Bailey and Karen (Lyndon) Decker and Kimberley Bailey, all of Ft. Madison. Preceding him in death was his father.
By his request, cremation has been accorded and there will be no service. Private family burial will take place at a later date.
