Joseph Douglas Edwards, 87 of Kingston, NY died Thursday, May 31st at New Paltz Center after a lengthy illness. Mr. Edwards was born August 18, 1930 in Kingston, NY and was the son of the late Douglas C and Alice Relyea Edwards. Mr. Edwards graduated Kingston High School and attended Ulster County Community College. He also served in the United States Coast Guard, stationed aboard a light house in Boston Harbor as well as a cutter in the North Atlantic. He was employed 30+ years with the US Post Office in Kingston as a rural mail carrier. Mr. Edwards received several safe driving awards during his employment.
He had a love of water and boating. In addition to his Coast Guard service he coached the YMCA and several swim club teams here in Kingston, even taking a team to a national meet in Florida. He was an avid swimmer competing in AAU Masters.
Surviving are two daughters; Alice Lynn (William) Hughes, Kathryn (Stanley) Ostrander; his 2nd wife, Marjorie Eckert Edwards and two step children; Joyce Ann and Anthony, a sister; A. Gail Edwards of Kingston as well as 10 grandchildren; several great grandchildren also survive.
He is pre-deceased by his 1st wife Mary Louise Hutton, daughters Joanne and Tracy and a son John.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Health Alliance Hospital and New Paltz Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing for their wonderful and compassionate care.
Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral & Cremation Service, 326 Albany Ave. Kingston, the family will receive their friends on Monday from 5 - 7 pm, with a Memorial Service at 7 pm.
