Larry Maynes, 79, of Carson, Iowa, passed away June 10, 2018 at the Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the Loess Hills Funeral Home in Carson. Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the service, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m at the funeral home.

Larry Maynes, one of six children of James Arthur and Edna Emily (Jensen) Maynes, was born on February 25, 1939 in Greenfield, Iowa. He grew up in Greenfield and graduated from the Greenfield High School in 1957. Larry continued his education at Ellsworth Community College and Simpson College where he received is BA in Education.
Larry and Lou Joyce Sackett were married on August 21, 1960 in Greenfield. Their marriage was blessed with four children, Byron, Nancy, Christine, and Renee.
Larry was a member of the Malvern United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He and his family lived in Malvern, Iowa where Larry taught social studies and coached high school girls' basketball and boys track from 1965 to 1975. He took a break from teaching and coaching and co-owned and operated Larry's Hardware in Malvern with Larry Hedlund from 1975 to 1980. He and his family moved to Carson, Iowa where Larry taught and coached at the Carson-Macedonia school.
Larry was family oriented and enjoyed going on camping trips with them. Following retirement, he and Lou enjoyed wintering in Arizona. He loved spending time with his family, whom were his pride and joy. Larry was a wonderful son, brother, husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa and a good friend to all who knew him. To so many others, he will always be remembered as "Coach".
Larry passed away on June 10, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, at the age of 79 years, 3 months, and 15 days. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Darrell Maynes; sister Barb Hill; and granddaughter Dawn Marie Stukenholtz.
Larry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lou Maynes of Carson; son Byron Maynes and wife Lynette of Salome, AZ; daughters, Nancy Easton and husband Bryan of Macedonia, IA, Christine Patterson and husband Roger of Pleasantville, IA, and Renee Stukenholtz and husband Matthew of Gretna, NE; 13 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren with baby "Dino" to arrive in July; siblings, Delores Huff of Massena, IA, Richard Maynes and wife Lea Anne of Spring Hill, KS, and Jim Maynes and wife Beth of Sioux City, IA; nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.

"I?m sorry I won?t be able to be there in person to celebrate the life of someone who made a huge impact on my life and the lives of many who knew him. Coach was one of the most influential people in my life. He guided, coached & expected you to do your best, but he seldom yelled (Gee took care of that;-) ) and was always respectful of us as individuals and as a team. Even after high school, he cared about each of us and quietly supported us as we made our way in life. We have lost a very special man and my heart goes out to Lou and his family. "Mr Maynes was my 7th grade teacher. He retired the end of my 8th grade year and I cried at the pep rally we had for him. I was in his class when I learned about 9/11. He stood in front of scared children and ensured us we were going to be ok. My favorite assignment was building our bridges. But don?t you even try to mouth off to Mr Maynes. He?d knock you on the noggon with his knuckles ?? "
"Lou you and your family are in my heart, so sorry for your loss. It was mentioned that we share one of our favorite memories of Larry. Well first off for several years you were my next door neighbor (Sandy Fay). But one memory that I will never forget is when I was a freshman. I was the girls track student manager and one of our realy teams made it to state. I was very happy for the team, but to my surprise Coach let me join them in Des Moines. For being one of the biggest and most faithful Panther fans it was truly the best part of my freshman year. A memory I will always have because of Coach Maynes."
