Jean Ziegler Chatterton, age 88, died on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Agrace Hospice Care surrounded by family and friends. She was born Aug. 26, 1929, to Maurice and Helen (Masters) Ziegler in Dubuque, IA. When Jean was 10 days old her mother died. She was raised by her grandparents George and Anne Masters and her aunt Amy Masters. Jean also remained close to her father who lived in Lancaster, WI. Jean was married to William (Bill) Chatterton on June 21, 1958 in Madison, WI. Bill preceded Jean in death in 2012. Her family is comforted in knowing that Mom and Dad spent their 60th wedding anniversary together.

Jean grew up in Dubuque and graduated from Dubuque Senior High. She attended Lawrence College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Economics. After graduation she worked for the Wisconsin State Legislature before becoming a full-time homemaker and caregiver for her daughters and husband. Bill was a prominent attorney in Madison and they lived in Maple Bluff their entire married lives. Jean and Bill had a very happy and loving marriage. They enjoyed travelling to Europe, often with their children. They especially loved France and enjoyed the food and wine. In Jean's last few years she enjoyed a trip to Germany and travelling to see her daughter in Malibu, CA.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Madison where she and Bill were married and where her children were baptized and also married. She was an active community volunteer her entire life.

Survivors include her children, Amy (Scott) Robinson of College Station, TX, Anne (David) Palmer of Malibu, CA, Mary (Jay) Besozzi of Torrington, CT and Grace (Jeff) Heyden of Chicago, IL; nine grandchildren ranging in age from 27 to 5 years old; James (Katie McCabe) Robinson, Katherine Besozzi, Andrew Palmer, Quentin Robinson, Laura Besozzi, Alexandra Palmer, John Besozzi, Mia Palmer and Bliss Heyden.

She was very close in her last years of life to her niece Jean (Bill) Hayes of Deforest, WI, her cousins Enid Woods of Branson, MO and Barbara Hanson of Los Angeles, CA.

Her family would like to acknowledge the loving care she and Bill received over the last few years from her helpers, at Comfort Keepers; Diana, Megan, Anissa, Kara, Jackie, Samantha, Tammi and her housekeeper Chris.

A Memorial Service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 116 W Washington Ave, Madison, WI, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. There will be a reception at the Maple Bluff Country Club following the service.

"Jean was proud to be a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority and was an active member of the Madison Alumnae Club for many years. She helped with the rebuilding of the UW chapter in the late 80s. She also sponsored me in Attic Angels for which I am very grateful. She had a good sense of humor and great common sense. I will miss her. Mary Kay Larson"
