VIRGINIA GUCK
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Virginia C. Guck, 98, of Muscatine, passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at her home.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018, at the St. Mathias Church. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the combined squads of the American Legion Post No 27 and the V.F.W. Post 1565. There will be a time of food and fellowship at Gannon Hall following the committal service.
Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2018, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Mary's Cemetery Association, Ss. Mary and Mathias Parish for Gannon Hall maintenance, or to Trinity Hospice.
Virginia was born on January 19, 1920, in Muscatine, the daughter of Ralph A. and Jessie Mable Trader McBride. She was a graduate of Muscatine High School, Class of 1937. She married Henry J. Guck on June 4, 1949, in Davenport. He preceded her in death on October 4, 1995.
She enlisted in the US Army in 1943 and served in the Nurse Corp achieving the rank of First Lieutenant. After returning from the service she attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, achieved her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Marycrest College. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Muscatine General Hospital. She later graduated from the University of Iowa with a teaching certificate and became an elementary teacher in the Muscatine School District for 15 years.
Virginia was a member of the Ss. Mary and Mathias Parish, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Joan of Arc Court 524, the Muscatine Association of Retired Teachers, American Legion Post No 27, the V.F.W. Post 1565, and was also a member of the Moose Lodge,
Those left to honor her memory include two sons, Thomas J. Guck and wife, Ann, of Muscatine, and Chris Guck and wife, Susan, of Roseville, Minnesota; seven grandchildren, Angela Guck, Melissa Gorham, Kimberly Guck, Stephanie Mathis and husband, Seth, Kevin Guck and wife, Andrea, Laura and Sarah Guck; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sons, Gregory, Charles, and Michael; one daughter, Kathleen Long; one brother, Charles McBride; and one half-brother, Donald Stevens.
