"In Remembrance of Mrs. Dorothy Teschendorf. After April 1975, there were refugees from Vietnam coming to the United States to flee the communist system in Viet Nam. Among these refugee families are young students aged 22-23 who choose Madison ? Wisconsin to become a place for their dream of continuing their life both in school and work in the hope of building a good future in a free country. In the first few days that they are going to MATC to study ESL, where they had the opportunity to meet a lenient teacher with dedicated teaching method for performing pronunciation and vocabulary properly. In addition to teaching English, the teacher also inquires about their lives and helps them with their daily life. The teacher invites them to visit her home, and then she has the kindness of inviting them to move to her home together with their families while they are looking for a stable place to live. While staying with her family, those students have the opportunity to improve their English and learn more about life style in America, besides that they also tried to do their best to cook Vietnamese food to treat her and her family. She joined them in attending the traditional Vietnamese New Year festival at Madison-Wis. After more than 38 years of graduated from UW-Madison, those students now are successful people in their life, and each time that they meet together they are reminiscent of Mrs. Dorothy with an affectionate respect and fondness and those noble deeds cultivated during those years and to follow Dorothy?s inspiration, they created a medical charity team to help thousands of poor patients for free medical treatment, heart surgery, eye surgery and help disabled patients in Vietnam today. In the cycle birth and death of the nature Mrs. Dorothy has departed, but with her great personality, her compassion and love forever lived with us and all of us pray God to welcome her to his Kingdom. MADISON--Dorothy Belle (Popke) Teschendorf, age 93, passed away on July 3, 2018 at Waunakee Manor in Waunakee, Wis. Dorothy was born May 22, 1925 in Birnamwood, Wis. to Walter E. and Orma M. (St. Thomas) Popke. Dorothy attended New London High School and graduated from Oshkosh State Teachers College (now UW-Oshkosh) with a degree in Education (Biology, Chemistry and History) in 1948.
Dorothy taught science at Barneveld High School in the mid-1960's. Dorothy provided foster and day care for many years. Dorothy tutored many international students in English and taught them to play two-handed Sheepshead. Dorothy always carried treats in her pockets for the neighborhood dogs.
Dorothy is survived by sons, Glenn (Mary Anne Derheimer), Gale (Lisa Godsey) and Kevin. Dorothy had eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by sons Daryl and Lee (Gertrude "Trudy" Trochta) and by her daughter Mercy (Lee) Martin (nee Lorna Teschendorf).
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday August 12, 2018 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church 110 N. Whitney Way, Madison. A visitation with the family will be held from 12:30 p.m. at the church. Committal will be Sunday, October 14, 2018 at 1:15 p.m. at Floral Hill Cemetery, 1210 W Beckert Rd, New London, WI.

"Glenn and Mary Anne: My wife and I are so sad to hear that Dorothy passed away. I met her in a party for international students 32 years ago when I was a new student at the UW-Madison. I stayed in her home for 6 years. She taught me English and American culture. She took me to many places including her relatives. She became my close friend and adviser in life as time went. When my wife came to the US she taught her English and became her close friend too. After we moved to Utah we still kept in tough. We always enjoyed her hand-written letters. My wife still keeps her letters. She once visited us here in Salt Lake City and we had a great time. She told me that she feels she is like a Queen in our home.
