Walter was born on October 16, 1921, to William and Maude (Petrie) Perkins in Marshalltown. He grew up in Marshalltown and attended Marshalltown schools. Walter served his country during World War II with the United States Army. Part of his time in the service was spent in Newfoundland. After he returned from the war, he was united in marriage to Margaret Scovill on February 2, 1946. They were blessed with two children, Steven and Kenny. He started working for the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway in 1952, retiring from the Chicago and North Western Railroad in 1983. He was a member of the American Legion. Walter had fond memories of time spent in Oakville, IA, with his wife, Margaret, and camping and fishing with family who lived there. He also enjoyed fishing and camping in Decorah, IA, hunting, going to the casino, and spending time with family and friends. His only grandchild, Lisa, was very special to him and they spent a lot of time together in her childhood. Walter made sure that people were well fed. He will be remembered for making delicious pies and goodies and sharing them with friends. He always had candy to hand out and on Halloween, he handed out the big candy bars.

Walter is survived by his son, Steven (Marcia) Perkins of Marshalltown; granddaughter Lisa (Joe) Huff of Anaheim, CA; great granddaughters Macy and Marin Huff of Anaheim; special friend Julie Mayer of Marshalltown; sister-in-law Mary Helen (Jerry) Stanton of Hutchinson, KS; brother-n-law Robert Scovill of Marshalltown; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; a son, Kenny Perkins; parents William and Maude; two brothers, Hank (Annabelle) Perkins and Lester (Shirley) Perkins; sister, Violet (Alfred) Eash; brothers-in-law Donald Scovill and Jim (Alice) Scovill; and sister-in-law Shirley Scovill.

The family would like to thank Iowa River Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. They would also like to thank Walter's special friend, Julie, for all that she has done for him.

"My prayers are with the family in this time of sorrow. Walt was a great person who loved his granddaughter and greatgrandchildren very much. You never went to visit that he wasn't ready with a updated on how they were all doing. He kept track of his friends too, he cared about people. Ill miss the fudge, he always seemed to whip up at the right time. He and Kenny would always batter on whose receipe was the best. They were all good, and when Margaret made noodles everybody wanted to be there. He always made sure you had a cold drink in his refrigerator. His home grown tomatoes were the best. The camping trips to Decorah were fun. When he talked about Nova Scotia during the war it was interesting he had made life long friends. He will be missed."
