Anne Louise Von Hoene, MMS
April 11, 1929 - September 5, 2018

Sister Anne Louise von Hoene, MMS, a native of Rutherford, New Jersey, died September 5, 2018, in Philadelphia. She was 89 years old.

After earning a B.A. in chemistry from Georgian Court College, NJ, Sister Anne Louise entered the Medical Mission Sisters (MMS) in 1951. She made her First Profession of Vows in 1954 and her Final Vows in 1959. After entering MMS Sister Anne Louise graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Her first overseas assignment was to Holy Family Hospital (HFH) in Berekum, Ghana, where she served as the pharmacist and local treasurer. After returning to the U.S. and earning an M.B.A. in hospital administration from the University of Chicago she went back to Berekum to serve as the administrator of HFH for 13 years.

Sister Anne Louise was active in the Diocesan Health Committee and the Church Hospital Association of Ghana. She also served as the MMS treasurer for Africa. Turning over her role as administrator to a Ghanaian, Sister Anne Louise returned to the U.S.to study investment management at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. Using her expert stewardship skills, Sister Anne Louise became the General Treasurer for MMS, serving for ten years at their global headquarters in London, England.

In 1998, pursuing her passion for social justice, Sister Anne Louise moved to Washington, DC and became involved in the Jubilee movement to cancel the debts of the world's poorest countries as well as being involved with the Africa Faith and Justice Network. Deeply respected for her critical thinking skills and strong sense of values, Sister Anne Louise was a healing presence at the U.S. Catholic Mission Association (USCMA) until 2014.

Reflecting on her 50 years as a Medical Mission Sister in 2004, Sister Anne Louise shared, "I feel much gratitude - gratitude especially to the Spirit who has led me in her gentle, sometimes powerful way through the highways and byways of life." Never flagging in her love for the mission and vision of MMS, Sister Anne Louise maintained a leadership role on her Community's investment committee and was a member of the MMS North American finance committee at the time of her passing.

Relatives and Friends are invited to call from 9:00 to !0:00 AM followed by Sister's Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the Medical Mission Sisters Chapel, 8400 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
