Genevieve "Jean" Murray, M.M.S.
January 30, 1924 - September 10, 2018

Sister Genevieve Murray, MMS, a native of Philadelphia, died September 13, 2018, in Philadelphia. She was 94 years old.

Better known by the nickname her family gave her, Jean, Sister entered the Medical Mission Sisters (MMS) in 1948, after working for six years as a stenographer and secretary following her graduation from Little Flower High School in Philadelphia. She made her First Profession of Vows in 1950 and her Final Vows in 1955. Known for her gentle nature and sweet smile, Sister Jean was honored to be asked to serve as secretary for Mother Anna Dengel, founder of MMS, in Rome. Afterwards, she worked for ten years at MMS's Community in Mt. View, California, where she oversaw the office. She also performed secretarial work for the MMS vocation coordinator as well as public relations work.

In 1976, Sister Jean earned an associate degree in applied science - mental health and social services at the Community College of Philadelphia, where she worked as a tutor in their Learning Lab. A life-long teacher, she went on to give lessons in shorthand and typing at the Bridge Therapeutic Center in addition to working as an aide at the Philadelphia State Mental Hospital. Sister Jean also served as vocation coordinator. In 1982 she went to Malawi, East Africa to teach at Our Lady of Wisdom Commercial School.

Five years later, Sister Jean returned to Philadelphia and continued teaching and doing secretarial work, eventually starting a new mission at Philadelphia's Immaculate Heart of Mary Center in 1991. For nearly 20 years she tutored students in English as a Second Language as well reading and math.

After retiring from mission, Sister Jean continued to be a healing presence, using her skills with the English language. A particularly friendly person, she offered lessons to Sisters working to improve their English whenever needed, and she also helped out in her Community by performing miscellaneous tasks such as filing and recording notes during meetings.

Several years ago, Sister Jean shared, "... [mission] is living in the presence of God, discovering the revelation He has for me in each new place, in the people and happenings in my life, and hopefully being some little expression of God's presence in our world as I try to be of service to others".

Relatives and friends are invited to Sister's Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 17, 2018 at the Medical Mission Sisters Chapel, 8400 Pine Road, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
