Mavis L. Petersen
August 25, 1930 - October 16, 2018

Mavis L. Petersen, 88, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton. She was born on August 25, 1930, in Sheffield, to Faiko and Kathryn (Barkela) Van Horn.

Mavis graduated from Mason City High School, class of 1948. She was united in marriage to Gerald Dwain Petersen on July 3, 1957, in Mason City. Mavis was a farm wife. She and Gerald farmed near Rock Falls for many years. They built a new home in Nora Springs and moved there in 1984. After retirement, they moved to Garner to be closer to family. In 2004, they moved to Hampton.

Mavis was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton and a former 4-H leader. She liked to cook, bake, read, work on crossword puzzles and go shopping. Mavis was a wonderful seamstress and made drapes, dresses and other clothing. She especially loved going to south Texas with Gerald. They wintered there for nineteen years. Mavis had a great sense of humor and always had coffee and baked goods for family, neighbors, and friends; she would welcome anyone.

Mavis is survived by her daughter Julie and husband Leonard Lind of Hampton, grandson David Birkey of Urbandale, grandson Travis and wife Missy Birkey of Emmetsburg, granddaughter Jill and husband Kyle Fett of Iowa Falls, great-grandchildren Audra and Noah Birkey, Trey and Finley Birkey, and Addie, Owen, Elsie, and Emmary Fett.

She was preceded in death by her parents Faiko and Kathryn and husband Gerald.
