Darrell James Bormann was born November 26, 1946, in Algona, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Lucille (Thilges) Bormann. He grew up in the St. Joe and Bancroft area and graduated from Bancroft St. John's High School in 1964.
After graduating from high school, he attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City, Iowa for two years to study accounting. He then transferred to Mankato State University and earned a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1970. His first teaching position began the following fall at the high school in Elmore, MN. In fall of 1974, he moved to Faribault, MN, where he continued to teach business courses in the high school for the next 24 years. While he was an educator, he was also a life-long learner. He earned a Master's in Education in 1976 and continued to take courses in accounting, computers, and driver's education. In addition, Darrell was an active community volunteer serving as Chairman of the Board for District One Hospital and Treasurer of the Faribault Area Community Theater. He was an active parishioner at St. Lawrence Catholic Church where he served as lector, Eucharistic minister, and confirmation education instructor. He enjoyed traveling with notable trips to Europe, Russia, and Alaska among his favorites. In 1998, Darrell suffered a debilitating stroke that forced him to retire from teaching and volunteer activities.
He impacted so many people throughout his life as a teacher, friend, brother, son, and community volunteer. He will be remembered as an intelligent, humble, kind-hearted, humorous, supportive, and caring person with meticulous cursive handwriting that flowed like artwork.
Darrell passed away Friday, November 16, 2018, at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City at the age of 71. He is survived by seven siblings, Nick Bormann (Freda Grove) of Bancroft, John Bormann (Gail) of Waukee, Carl Bormann (Diane Burbach) of Bancroft, Carleen "Kay" Proehl (Terry) of Mapleton, MN, Paul Bormann (MaryAnn) of Bancroft, Diane Lee of Mason City, and Carol Young (Richard) of Roseville, MN. He is also survived by 20 nieces/nephews and several grand nieces/nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Alfred (February, 2015), mother Lucille (February, 2009), and brother, Eugene (March, 1990).

He always took the time to get the best out of you. Everything he taught was related to real life; and though those lessons were subtle they were impactful.
