A memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Carson Celebration of Life Center in Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.

Sue Schoenthaler was born on December 7, 1929 in Maquoketa, Iowa, to Everett Leroy and Dorothy (Phillips) Schoenthaler. She was a 1947 graduate of Maquoketa High School and attended Iowa State University in Ames for two years. She married George James Spalding on October 16, 1949 in Maquoketa, Iowa.

Sue was a proud member of the Maquoketa community and active in several organizations. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she had taught Sunday School, and the Chapter BX PEO where she had served as a past president. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Kappa Delta Sorority, and the Maquoketa Library Board. She had also been a past Brownie and Cub Scout leader.

Many things gave Sue great joy, but her primary interest and focus was her family. She was a wonderful mother and caregiver. She loved children, reading biographies, baking and nature, especially hiking and picnics. Her favorite vacation spot was any place with a view of a lake or ocean.

Those left to honor Sue's memory include her children, Scott (Laurnet) Spalding of Maquoketa, IA, and Sarah Jane "Sally" Spalding of L'Arche Community in Clinton, IA; 2 granddaughters Leslie (Kyle) Bubke and Laura (Dan) Stephenson; 2 great-grandchildren, Noah and Henry Bubke; and a brother, David (Karen) Schoenthaler of Venice, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George on December 27, 2014, and a sister Carol Carpenter.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be directed to L'Arche Community For The Disabled in Clinton, Iowa, or to the First United Methodist Church in Maquoketa.

"Sue's parents-in-law were my backdoor neighbors, her husband sold me shoes, her son was my classmate, and I was her paper boy. Perhaps that is why I remember her so well, even though I probably haven't seen her for more than 50 years. More likely, however, it is because she was always one of the most pleasant adults I ever had the pleasure to know, as I was growing up in Maquoketa."
