Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Harvey W. Kahl, 83, of Malvern, IA passed away January 8, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Omaha, NE.

***UPDATED Funeral Location***** Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the Loess Hills Funeral Home in Malvern. Burial with military honors will be held in the Mineola Cemetery. Visitation with family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m on Friday, January 11, 2019 at the funeral home.

Obituary by Harvey Kahl

Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Harvey Kahl, the eldest of seven children of Helen Clara (Dittman) and William Albert Kahl, was born on February 26, 1935 on a farm between Glenwood and Mineola, Iowa.

Harvey served 2 ½ years in the National Guard before being drafted into the United States Army in 1957. His stations included several Army Missile Commands and Air Defense Artillery Groups at Army bases throughout the United States and Germany where he served as Fire Control Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant, Senior Drill Sergeant, and Sergeant Major. His awards and decorations include: Good Conduct Medal 9th Award, Army Achievement Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and two awards of Legion of Merit. Harvey was honorably discharged in 1987. He obtained his associate's degree and worked at Louisiana Pacific in Alabama for 12 years until retirement.

In February 2016, Harvey moved to Malvern, Iowa to live near family and where he made many friends. He became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod - Hastings and was a member of the Gordon May Legion Post 439 in Silver City. Harvey enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, and would be seen in area parades or driving around town in his red '57 Chevy style golf cart.

Harvey fought a courageous battle with cancer before passing away on January 8, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Helen.

Harvey is survived by his son, Randy Kahl; grandson Derrick Steffen; brother William Kahl and wife Delores of Crescent, IA; sisters, Betty Williams of Little Rock, AR, Elaine Knight and Janna Brammer, both of Council Bluffs, IA, Linda Michael of Malvern, and Susan Sands and husband Mike of Kansas City, MO; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.
