"I was shocked to learn of the passing of LtCol. Matt Stover. I didn't know him personally, but he was previously the C.O. of VMGR-152 a year or so ago and I was in correspondence with him. He was one of those special guys that took time out of his obviously busy schedule to respond to my email requests for information about what was going on at VMGR-152 so I could share it in our KC-130 community "Transporter" newsletter. He didn't know me from Adam, but recognized I was trying to keep our community connected and informed which is part of our mission. It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Matthew Stover, loving and devoted husband, father, and friend to all whose lives he touched, on February 13, 2019. He was called home surrounded by family after a hard fought battle with cancer. Matt was born in Des Moines, Iowa on September 19, 1971 and married the love of his life, Kimberly Stover, on September 1, 1995.
President Theodore Roosevelt once said "Much has been given us, and much will rightfully be expected from us." Matt embodied this ideal and embraced a cause bigger than himself by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and eventually becoming a commissioned officer and naval aviator. Before becoming the current Executive Officer of MCAS Beaufort, he flew CH-46s and KC-130s culminating with serving as the Commanding Officer of Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 152. Matt's infectious personality, kind and giving nature, and smile that lit up any room he entered will be missed by all who knew him.
Matt is survived by his wife, Kimberly Stover, their four sons Gabriel, Ethan, Caleb, and Isaac, his father Harry Stover Jr., and his brother Vincent Stover.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Prairie City United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends following the service at a luncheon. The family requests that donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to either the Semper Fi Fund or the Wingman Foundation. Condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com
