Joseph Gerard "Jerry" Wingerter, age 84, of 1346 Chestnut, died October 11, 2011, at 11:45 am in his home.
Joseph was born November 11, 1926 in Quincy, Illinois, the son of Willis Elmo and Helen Wittkopf Wingerter. He married Juanita Irene Yenter on June 18, 1948 in Quincy. She survives.
Jerry served in the United States Navy, as a Gunner's Mate 3rd class, during World War II. He was awarded three battle stars in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater for service in the Lingayen Gulf, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Jerry also served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, DAV, and the Destroyer Escort Sailors' Association.
Jerry was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a good man who was much loved and well-respected by all who knew him.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Juanita, include five sons, James C. (Diane) Wingerter of Quincy, John (Ellen) Wingerter of Quincy, Joel Wingerter of Ashville, NC, Jack (Ann) Wingerter of Belleville, IL, Jeffrey (Milagros) Wingerter of Macomb, IL; a step-daughter, Joy Beth (Mike) Harowitz of Lawton, OK; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Denny Lee (Carol) Wingerter of Quincy.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Jennifer Irene Wingerter.
Services: 10:30 am Friday, October 14, 2011 at Sunset Cemetery, with the Rev. Roger Selves officiating.
Burial: Sunset Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois
Visitation: 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Thursday October 13, 2011 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
