Dr. John Underwood

Dr. John William Underwood, age 65, of 4918 Lake Ridge Drive, Quincy, died Friday, March 11, 2011 at 4:25 p.m. in his home.

He was born June 3, 1945 in Monroe, Louisiana, the son of Harrison and Dorothy Tanner Underwood. On July 3, 2005 he married Diana Speer in Quincy, Illinois. She survives.

John attended grade school in Loraine, IL and was a graduate of Unity High School in Mendon where he was an Eagle Scout. He was a graduate of Colorado State University and Creighton University Medical School in Omaha. He served his residency at the University of Minnesota and finished in 1978. John was an Obstetrician and Gynecologist in Coon Rapids, MN for 25 years. He moved to Ft. Madison, Iowa where he practiced for 5 years. He retired in 2000. In 2001 the Fort Madison Chamber of Commerce recognized him with the Distinguished Citizen Award. He then moved to Quincy to be near his parents.

He was a member of First Christian Church and Trinity United Church of Christ, the Quincy Golden K Kiwanis, and Men of Blessing. John played Bridge at the Senior Center and played with his father in the Underwood Family Band which performed weekly in local nursing homes and retirement centers. He was a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was a board certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist. He was a member of Spring Lake Country Club.

Survivors in addition to his wife and his father include: 2 sons - Richard (fiance' Jennifer Alyssa Swanson) Underwood of Minneapolis, MN, and John (Kari) Underwood of Plymouth, MN; a grandson, Jackson William Underwood of Plymouth, MN; a stepson, Denver (Karista) Rummenie of Springfield, IL; a step grandson, James Russell Rummenie of Quincy, IL. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Services: Monday, March 14, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. in First Christian Church with Rev, Timothy A. White officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.

Visitation: Sunday, March 13, 2011 from 4-7 p.m. at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home

Memorials: Harrison Underwood Scholarship Foundation at Unity High School or Blessing Hospice.
