George R. Gunther

George R. Gunther, 90, 1707 No. 12th, Quincy, formerly of 1100 South 21st, Quincy, died Monday, February 21, 2000 at 6pm in Blessing Hospital.

He was born February 22, 1909 in Coatsburg, Illinois, the son of Simon and Clara Hornecker Gunther.

On January 1,1942, he married Dolly Whitaker in Palmyra, MO. She preceded him in death on July 8, 1996.

He attended Coatsburg High School, and he served in the Us Army from June 10, 1942 to July 14, 1945 serving in the European African Middle Eastern Theater in the following campaigns-French Moroccan, Tunisian, Sicilian, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno, Northern Appines, Po Valley and Arrowhead. He received one silver and two bronze battle stars.

Mr. Gunther retired from Hinton Motor Service where he had worked many years as a mechanic. Prior to that, he had been employed as a mechanic for many years at Geise Buick.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #37, V. F. W. and the South Side Boat Club.

He is survived by his nieces and nephews: Robert Gunther East Peoria, IL, Ronald Gunther, Bartonville, IL, Jessie and Robert Heriford, Kahoka, MO, Robert and Cheryl Whitaker, Argyle, IA, Ralph and Sue Whitaker, Loraine, IL, Bonnie Crawford, Tama, IA, Helen Ogborne, CA, Norman and Sue Whitaker, Ewing,MO, George and Linda Whitaker, Durham, MO, Linda Whitaker, Antioch, MO, Kenneth and Virginia Whittaker, Quincy, IL, Donald R. Dean, Rushville, IL. His parents, a brother Clarence Gunther and sister Elanor also preceded him in death.

Funeral Services will be 11 am Friday, February 25, at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, Rev. Henry Pratt officiating. Burial will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Quincy, Illinois with military rites by the American Legion Post #37.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 A. M. to 11:00 A.M. Friday at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
