Rev. Richard Welch

Rev. Richard Bruce "Rick" Welch, age 63 of 1006 Christopher Court, Quincy, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 9:33 am in Blessing Hospital.

Rick was born April 5, 1947 in Buffalo, New York, the son of Robert F. and Alice M. Welch. He graduated from Elmhurst College with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1970. On July 10, 1971 he married Susan "Sue" Davis in St. Petersburg, Florida. A year later, Rick received his Master of Divinity from Eden Seminary in Webster Groves, Missouri.

Rick began his lifelong pastoral service as pastor at First United Church of Christ in Newton, Iowa and Haverhill United Church of Christ in Haverhill, Iowa. He then served at Stow Community United Church of Christ in Stow, Ohio. He was an interim pastor at East Market Street United Church of Christ in Akron, Ohio.

After moving to Quincy in 1986, Rick worked at Good Samaritan Home as an Associate Administrator, Operations Manager, and Chaplain. He served as pastor at Payson Congregational United Church of Christ beginning in 2002. He was also pastor at Bluff Hall Church.

Rick continued his service to the community as a member of the Quincy Noon Kiwanis Club, where he served as secretary for over 19 years. He coached his sons' youth soccer and baseball teams, was a passionate golfer, and enjoyed family camping trips. Rick was a loyal fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Dolphins, but his favorite teams and groups were those in which his children were involved.

Survivors in addition to his wife of 39 years include three children, Ryan Welch of Quincy, Ross Welch and his partner Naomi Warren of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Allison Welch of Normal, Illinois; a sister, Sharon Stiles of Pinehurst, North Carolina; and two nephews, Darron Stiles and wife Kim of Pinehurst, North Carolina, and Royce and Lisa Warren of New Port Richey, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial Services: 1:00 pm Saturday, June 26, 2010 in Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ with Chaplain Steve Disseler officiating.

Visitation: 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, June 26 at Salem Evangelical United Church of Christ.

Memorials: The First Tee Program, Quincy Noon Kiwanis' Dictionaries for Third Graders Fund, United Church of Christ-Strengthen the Church Mission Offering.
